  • The Evolution of Human Language

    Open Access•Marc D Hauser, Michael A Hauser et al.•BOOK•Evolution of Human Language•2010

The way language as a human faculty has evolved is a question that preoccupies researchers from a wide spread of disciplines. In this book, a team of writers has been brought together to examine the evolution of language from a variety of such standpoints, including language's genetic basis, the anthropological context of its appearance, its formal structure, its relation to systems of cognition and thought, as well as its possible evolutionary a…

  • Cysteine-rich venom proteins from the snakes of Viperinae subfamily – Molecular cloning and phylogenetic relationship

Open Access•Derek Bickerton, Anna S Ramazanova et al.•ARTICLE•Toxicon•2009

Cysteine-rich proteins found in animal venoms (CRISP-Vs) are members of a large family of cysteine-rich secretory proteins (CRISPs). CRISP-Vs acting on different ion channels were found in venoms or mRNA (cDNA) encoding CRISP-Vs were cloned from snakes of three main families (Elapidae, Colubridae and Viperidae). About thirty snake CRISP-Vs were sequenced so far, however no complete sequence for CRISP-V from Viperinae subfamily was reported. We ha…

  • Reconsidering Creole Exceptionalism

    Open Access•Derek Bickerton•ARTICLE•Language•2004

DeGraffs Discussion Note in Language 79.2.391-410 (‘Against Creole exceptionalism’, henceforth ACE) combines an accusation that the views of many, perhaps most of his creolist colleagues are vitiated by (perhaps unconscious) racial prejudice with the espousal of a theory of Creole genesis that has been around for a century or more without earning the support of more than a handful of creolists. ACE represents a striking volte-face from the modera…

  • Foraging versus Social Intelligence in the Evolution of Protolanguage

    Derek Bickerton•CHAPTER•The transition to language•2002

his volume ... takes as its starting-point the view of human intelligence as social, concerned with one’s own and others’ desires and motives, and of language as a device for forming alliances, making friends, and thus achieving successful feeding and mating through a complex social network. From this perspective, phonologists and syntacticians may explore the origins of the sound patterns and formal structures that characterize all language.

In the course of reviewing recent books on the evolution of language and communication (Dunbar 1996, Hauser 1996, Deacon 1997) I have had occasion to note that relatively few writers on these topics know much about …

  • The Evolutionary Emergence of Language

Open Access•Robbins Burling, Jason Noble et al.•BOOK•Evolutionary Emergence of Language•2000

Language has no counterpart in the animal world. Unique to Homo sapiens, it appears inseparable from human nature. But how, when and why did it emerge? The contributors to this volume - linguists, anthropologists, cognitive scientists, and others - adopt a modern Darwinian perspective which offers a bold synthesis of the human and natural sciences. As a feature of human social intelligence, language evolution is driven by biologically anomalous l…

  • A Sociohistoric Examination of Afrogenesis

Derek Bickerton•ARTICLE•Journal of Pidgin and Creole…•1998

Afrogenesis is taken here to mean the belief that the English-based Atlantic creole languages originated on the West Coast of Africa. This paper shows that Afrogenesis, originally proposed in work by Hancock and by Smith, and now given a new lease on life by McWhorter, is at best highly dubious. The same is true of any single-source, diffusionist account of the similarities between the English-based creoles

  • The Nature of a Creole Continuum

    Derek Bickerton•ARTICLE•Language•1973•Citada por: 32

Hitherto, post-Saussurean linguistic theories have been unable to provide satisfactory descriptions of a creole continuum. This paper reviews previous attempts in the field, and indicates the need for a different theoretical orientation—one which would replace static, synchronic models of polar dialects with a single dynamic model incorporating both these and all the intermediate variations. In support of this argument, two sub-systems of the Guy…

The presentation of Washabaugh 1977 represents a retrograde step in the analysis of creole systems. Though he may be correct in his belief that the constraints on complementizer variation were inadequately stated in Bickerton 1971, his decision to replace that analysis by one based on lexical diffusion and the perception of surface structures is vitiated by a number of errors, both analytic and statistical, and ignores what is most interesting ab…

    Open Access•Derek Bickerton•ARTICLE•Behavioral and Brain Sciences•1984

It is hypothesized that creole languages are largely invented by children and show fundamental similarities, which derive from a biological program for language. The structures of Hawaiian Pidgin and Hawaiian Creole are contrasted, and evidence is provided to show that the latter derived from the former in a single generation. A realistic model of the processes of Creole formation shows how several specific historical and demographic factors inte…

Derek Bickerton•ARTICLE•Journal of Pidgin and Creole…•1989

Hitherto it has been believed that serial verb constructions were not found in the French Creoles of the Indian Ocean. In fact, there exists a wide variety of such constructions in both Morisyen and Seselwa; extensive examples from Seselwa are provided. However, for less basilectal speakers, such constructions must carry on each verb a tense marker which is identical to that on the matrix verb. This fact, together with the misanalysis of Seselwa …
