Cannabis Use and Mental Health Coping Behavior among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Women during the Covid-19 Pandemic
Persistent racial ethnic inequities in mental health care and access to cannabis were magnified during the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring the need to better understand coping behaviors among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) women cannabis consumers. This study aimed to evaluate cannabis use patterns and mental health coping behaviors among BIPOC women during the COVID-19 pandemic. Self-reported data from 1,239 womenwho consumed can…

Psychometric properties of an abbreviated Childhood Family Mealtime Questionnaire among overweight and obese Hispanic adolescents
Two-Year Changes in Neighborhood Juvenile Arrests After Implementation of a Park-Based Afterschool Mental Health Promotion Program in Miami–Dade County, Florida, 2015–2017
Objectives. To examine the association of Fit2Lead, an afterschool park-based youth mental health promotion program, and neighborhood juvenile arrests (2015–2017) in Miami–Dade County, Florida. Methods. We tracked juvenile (ages 12–17 years) arrest rates over 2 years of program implementation across zip codes matched by (1) park and (2) baseline sociodemographics and youth arrests. Fit2Lead mental and physical health, meditation, resilience, and …
Natural experiment examining the longitudinal association between change in residential segregation and youth cardiovascular health across race/ethnicity and gender in the USA
BACKGROUND: Identifying how racial/ethnic residential segregation and mobility may impact health can guide innovative strategies for reducing youth disparities. METHODS: This natural experiment examined the association between change in residential segregation and cardiovascular health outcomes across race/ethnicity and gender for youth (n=2250, mean age 9.1 years, 54% male; 51% Hispanic, 49% non-Hispanic black (NHB); 49% high area poverty) atten…
Longitudinal analysis of cardiovascular disease risk profile in neighbourhood poverty subgroups
BACKGROUND: The WHO calls for affordable population-based prevention strategies for reducing the global burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) on morbidity and mortality; however, effective, sustainable and accessible community-based approaches for CVD prevention in at-risk youth have yet to be identified. We examined the effects of implementing a daily park-based afterschool fitness programme on youth CVD risk profiles over 5 years and across ar…
Impact of change in neighborhood racial/ethnic segregation on cardiovascular health in minority youth attending a park-based afterschool program
Effect of a Two-Year Obesity Prevention Intervention on Percentile Changes in Body Mass Index and Academic Performance in Low-Income Elementary School Children
Objectives. We assessed the effects of a school-based obesity prevention intervention that included dietary, curricula, and physical activity components on body mass index (BMI) percentiles and academic performance among low-income elementary school children. Methods. The study had a quasi-experimental design (4 intervention schools and 1 control school; 4588 schoolchildren; 48% Hispanic) and was conducted over a 2-year period. Data are presented…
A community-based breast cancer screening program for medically underserved women
Participation in the EDP increases the likelihood of early detection of breast cancer and reduces the hazard of death for medically underserved women in the Miami-Dade County area of Florida. Interestingly, white Hispanics showed a better survival than did both African-Americans and white non-Hispanics. Our research also demonstrates the value of utilizing existing cancer registry data to evaluate a community-based program such as the EDP
An ecological analysis of childhood-onset type 1 diabetes incidence and prevalence in Latin America
Our results suggest that the presence of the Amerindian component of the population in Latin America provides protection against childhood-onset type 1 diabetes. Our results also confirm the association previously reported in other countries and regions of the world of type 1 diabetes and milk consumption. Further studies are needed to develop and test potential genetic and environmental hypotheses that could help to better understand the interpl…
