  • Technological variability and raw material procurement in the Cantabrian Lower Magdalenian

    Open Access•Diego Herrero-Alonso, Sergio Martín-Jarque et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2026

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the lithic assemblage from Level G1 of El Cierro Cave (northern Spain), attributed to the Cantabrian Lower Magdalenian. The study comprises 2,829 items, including 2,800 knapped artefacts, six macrolithic tools and 23 unmodified pebbles. Lithic procurement is dominated by flint, followed by quartzite and minor amounts of quartz. Eleven flint types have been identified, with local raw materials prevai…

  • Archaeological Lithotheques of Siliceous Rocks in Spain

    Open Access•David Ortega, A Arrizabalaga et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2025•Referencias: 15

The use of lithotheques, libraries or collections of rocks is relatively recent in archaeological research in Spain. These collections have mostly been formed through isolated initiatives in different institutions, without any scientific strategy to guide their development and growth. The perspective in the last few years has changed substantially as these infrastructures are now regarded as a scientific resource of great interest and potential i…

  • Neanderthal mobility over very long distances

    Open Access•Diego Herrero-Alonso, José-Manuel Maíllo-Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 66

This study explores the mobility and raw material circulation of Neanderthals at the El Castillo cave, located in the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula, with a particular focus on flint. The levels analyzed (XXab-XXf1.1) date between 45 and 70 ka BP, corresponding to the Mousterian period and, in some cases, to the Vasconian facies. Most of the flint varieties are of local origin ( 250 km). These findings provide insights into patterns of li…

The lithic assemblage studied here comes from Cova Rosa, one of the main Upper Palaeolithic sites in Asturias (northern Spain). The remains were found in Layer B5, which was excavated by F. Jordá Cerdá and A. Gómez Fuentes in 1978 and are associated with an osseous assemblage and archaeozoological remains. This occupation has been dated by radiocarbon to about 16,400 BP ( ca . 19.8–19.6 ka cal BP), corresponding to Archaic/Lower Magdalenian. The …

    Open Access•Sergio Martín-Jarque, Antonio Tarriño et al.•ARTICLE•L Anthropologie•2023

[En] Flint was the most widely used lithic raw material in Europe in Prehistory and, more specifically, was a fundamental resource in the economic and social networks of hunter-gatherer groups in the Cantabrian Spain during the Upper Palaeolithic. The undeniable preference for it compared with other resources was due to a series of factors, such as its easy availability because of its abundance and wide distribution of outcrops, and its excellent…

This paper presents the current state of research on the Early Neolithic flint quarry of Pozarrate (Treviño, Burgos) in the north of Spain. This site is part of the Prehistoric Flint Mining Complex of Treviño. The geological features of the territory made it a suitable place for the exploitation of the Treviño flint since Paleolithic times, especially during the Neolithic. Recent research at the site has revealed interesting findings, such as ant…

A new classification system is proposed to describe the volumetric formats of clastic lithic products of geological and archaeological origin. In order to build this operative classification, the rectangular block or cuboid is established as the standard geometric format to represent their three-dimensional format (the X-axis being length or long diameter, the Y-axis being the width or intermediate diameter, and the Z-axis being the thickness or …

  • Chert from the Vegamián Formation

    Open Access•Diego Herrero-Alonso, Antonio Tarriño-Vinagre et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2016

This work provides the keys to the mineralogical and geochemical characterization of black chert from the Vegamián Fm. This formation crops out throughout the whole of the Cantabrian Zone (of Palaeozoic age), one of the geological zones of the Cantabrian Mountains (NW Spain). The geographical distribution of this formation is very wide, surfacing in the provinces of León, Asturias, Palencia and Cantabria. This variety of chert had been included wi…

  • La gestión de las materias primas silíceas en el Pirineo Occidental

    Open Access•Irantzu Elorrieta-Baigorri, Antonio Tarriño-Vinagre•ARTICLE•Munibe Antropologia-Arkeologia•2016

The Western Pyrenees is an area remarkable for its well-known flint outcrops that were exploited as siliceous raw material sources by the prehistoric societies that occupied the territory. Berroberria cave (Urdax, Navarre) is located in this part of the Pyrenees and it has a large Magdalenian stratigraphy. In this work the results of the siliceous raw materials provenance of the collection of level G are presented. The selected level dates from t…

  • Siliceous raw material consumption during the late Upper Palaeolithic in “El Pirulejo”, South of Iberia (Priego, Córdoba)

Open Access•Isabel Cánovas Calle, María Dolores Simón Vallejo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2018

This work presents the first results about the use of siliceous raw materials by the hunter-gatherer societies during the Late Glacial in the level 5 of El Pirulejo. El Pirulejo is located within the municipality of Priego de Córdoba (Córdoba, Spain). The archaeological level P/5 is classified as a Solutrean, according to the technological analysis of the lithic assemblage. The methodology used about the raw material is divided into four phases. D…

  • Local-regional raw material procurement in the "Mesolithic with geometrics" south of the Picos de Europa (Cantabrian Mountains, Spain)

Open Access•Diego Herrero-Alonso, Diego Herrero Alonso et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of the International…•2021

In this work we have analysed the provenance of the lithic raw materials recovered during the excavation campaigns at two Mesolithic sites of the Cantabrian Mountains: La Uña (levels III and IV) and El Espertín (level II). From the data obtained, differences between the two deposits and their levels have been observed, with sourcing of very similar lithic resources, but with important differences in the percentages. In the case of El Espertín the…
