The Role of Family Help in the Housing Decisions of Young People
Recent debates about flows of help within the family have indicated considerable diversity according to the type of help (money, services), and ages and gender of those involved, and have shown that values are only a partial guide to the scale of such flows. This paper focuses on a particular occasion for help, young people's housing, and a particular region, South-East England, where one would expect family financial help to be high given the ca…

With a few exceptions, it is shown that in each case Castells's comment reflects misunderstandings and theoretical confusions, and docs not set out an effective alternative to…

Ceci permet de passer à un examen critique de deux études récentes majeures sur la politique urbaine en France partant d'une perspective marxiste-celles de Lojkine et de Biarez et al. II est montré que les points forts et les points faibles de ces études conc…

On the Study of Urban Social Movements
The article makes a critical assessment of the approach to urban protest developed by Manuel Castells and colleagues. Problems are identified in the definition of the term urban social movement, the identifation of their effects and the theoretical assumptions made about the central and local state. The approach is shown to neglect the mobilization process, and to ignore effects obtained by conventional institutional methods of demand-making. The…
