A 'Paired Cases Contrast' Method in the Absence of Reliable Metrics in Organizational Research
We offer initial proof for a 'contrast of paired cases' method for arriving at statistically reliable insights about innovation, which, our data demonstrated, has the potential for being generalized to many types of organizations, rather than being restricted to organizations of a particular size, type, or sector. Our method relied on making sure respondents drew sharp contrasts between two different organizations with which they were intimately …
Testing Parsons
Talcott Parsons' ideas are shown to have operational meaning when applied to organizations in two respects. (1) Parsons' typology of system needs provides a meaningful way of categorizing administrative rules (protocols) developed by the subunit under study, and (2) 'phase dominance,' anticipated by structural functionalists, is tested. This study examines administrative protocols established by a ground‐level subunit in a complex organization during a 13‐year period. The protocols are identifiable, verifiable, and (for the questions examined in this study) objectively interpretable.
