  • Negotiating (with) Fire

Open Access•Sarah Cogo, Sarah Cogos et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology•2021

In Sweden, fire management is driven by nature conservation objectives through both regeneration burning, used as a soil preparation method in forestry, and conservation burning in protected forests, aiming to reintroduce fire as an ecological process necessary for the preservation of biodiversity. The burning strategy affects Indigenous Sami reindeer herders who use commercial and protected forestlands as pastures for their reindeer. Fire can ha…

  • Culturally modified trees and forest structure at a Kawésqar ancient settlement at Río Batchelor, western Patagonia

Open Access•Lars Östlund, Gabriel Zegers et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2020

Indigenous land use occurring on temporal scales over centuries or millennia shapes forests in specific ways and influences the dynamics of forest ecosystems. It is challenging to study such land use, but analysis of “culturally modified trees” (CMTs) can give precise spatial and temporal information on past land use by indigenous people. The aim of this study was to increase our knowledge of indigenous use of land and resources in Nothofagus for…

  • Forest Fire and Indigenous Sami Land Use

Open Access•Sarah Cogo, Sarah Cogos et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2019

During the last two centuries, fire suppression has critically modified boreal ecosystems in northern Scandinavia and has undoubtedly affected indigenous Sami land use. We inventoried Sami toponyms referring to fire in a municipality located in Swedish Sápmi, and investigated their past and present meanings by analyzing Sami dictionaries and conducting semi-structured interviews with Sami reindeer herders. We use toponyms based on the Sami word ‘…

  • Le Pâturage, C'est toute une science

    Open Access•Samuel Roturier, Marie Roué•ARTICLE•Techniques & culture•2015•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 11
