Early Labor Market Outcomes of Young Adults From Same‐Sex Families
Objective This study offers the first population‐based evidence on how young adults from same‐sex families fare when entering the labor market shortly after leaving full‐time education. Background Same‐sex couples' parenting rights remain controversial in many countries. Although most studies suggest that children from same‐sex families perform at least as well as children from different‐sex families in childhood or adolescence, data limitations …
Fertility Outcomes of Adult Children With Divorced Parents
Each year, a substantial proportion of children experience the divorce of their parents. Despite numerous studies examining the consequences of parental divorce across various aspects of children's well-being in childhood, evidence of their family prospects in adulthood is scarce. Using administrative data from the Netherlands that spans three generations, we provide the first evidence based on population data of completed fertility and childless…

The effect of funding for disadvantaged students on academic underachievement
We estimate the effect of school funding for disadvantaged students on academic underachievement in primary education. For this purpose, we exploit a policy in Belgium that granted additional funding for schools with a share of disadvantaged students of at least 10%. Combining stochastic frontier analysis (a method to measure efficiency) with regression discontinuity design, we find that while additional funding does not affect achievement, it do…
Does Price Personalization Ethically Outperform Unitary Pricing? A Thought Experiment and a Simulation Study
Merchants often use personalized pricing: they charge different consumers different prices for the same product. We assess the ethicality of personalized pricing by generalizing and extending an earlier model by Coker and Izaret (Journal of Business Ethics 173:387–398, 2021) who found that price personalization ethically outperforms unitary pricing. Using a simulation analysis, we show that these results crucially depend on the choice of paramete…
The Mental Health of Female and Male Homemakers
Homemakers-those staying at home while their partner works-often report higher life satisfaction and happiness than workers, but it remains to be seen whether this holds for their mental health. We investigate how the mental health of homemakers compares to their mental health while they were working, considering gender, parenthood, and homemaking duration. Using longitudinal Dutch (medical) register data from 2006 to 2021, we apply fixed-effects…
The Impact of School Closures on Learning and Mental Health of Children
To curb the spread of the coronavirus, almost all countries implemented nationwide school closures. Suddenly, students experienced a serious disruption to their school and social lives. In this article, we argue that psychological research offers crucial insights for guiding policy about school closures during crises. To this end, we review the existing literature on the impact of school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic on children’s learnin…
Identifying Politically Connected Firms
This article introduces machine learning techniques to identify politically connected firms. By assembling information from publicly available sources and the Orbis company database, we constructed a novel firm population dataset from Czechia in which various forms of political connections can be determined. The data about firms' connections are unique and comprehensive. They include political donations by the firm, having members of managerial b…
The association between parenthood and health
Understanding social inequalities in parental health is crucial for family functioning and child development. Theoretically, the double burden of parenting and minority stress may lead to the negative association between parenthood and health outcomes being stronger for people in same-sex relationships. Moreover, drawn from the social control process and the compensation mechanism, the negative association between parenthood and health risk behav…
Profiles Among Women Without a Paid Job and Social Benefits
Despite their potential vulnerability and untapped work potential, research on the group of women without a paid job and social benefits is limited. This study is the first to identify profiles among women in this group based on their intersecting economic, sociodemographic and contextual characteristics. A cluster analysis conducted on Dutch population register data from 2019 challenges previous research that lumped women without a paid job and …
Doing Genders
Partnered men and women show consistently gendered patterns of labor market behavior. We test whether not only a person's own gender, but also their partner's gender shapes hours worked. We use Dutch administrative population data on almost 5,000 persons who had both male and female partners, whose hours worked we observe monthly over 15 years. We argue that this provides a unique setting to assess the relevance of partner's gender for labor mark…
Mental health of children with gender and sexual minority parents
This article reviews the literature between 2015 and 2022 on mental health disparities between children with gender and sexual minority parents and children with different-sex parents. Although most studies indicate that children with gender and sexual minority parents do not experience more mental health problems than children with different-sex parents, the results are mixed and depend on the underlying sample. The review highlights important s…
Behavioral Outcomes of Children with Same-Sex Parents in The Netherlands
Same-sex parents face substantial stressors due to their sexual orientation, such as experiences of prejudice and prohibitive legal environments. This added stress is likely to lead to reduced physical and mental health in same-sex parents that, in turn, may translate into problematic behavioral outcomes in their children. To date, there are only a few nationally representative studies that investigate the well-being of children with same-sex par…
Persistent and transient inefficiency in adult education
This paper evaluates the inefficiency of adult education programs. Using an advanced four-component stochastic frontier model on Belgian adult education data, we distinguish between persistent and transient inefficiency of adult education programs. Whereas persistent inefficiency is structural and difficult to tackle because of its time-invariant nature, transient inefficiency can be eliminated somewhat easily without a major structural change. T…
The effect of modular education on school dropout
Modular education refers to the division of conventional courses into smaller components or modules. Each module enables students to obtain a partial certificate that can be combined into a qualification. This article evaluates whether modular education, which is widely used in secondary and tertiary education, has been effective in reducing school dropout. For this purpose, the study exploits a policy change in the Flemish Community of Belgium, …
School Outcomes of Children Raised by Same-Sex Parents
Although widely used in policy debates, the literature on children's outcomes when raised by same-sex parents mostly relies on small selective samples or samples based on cross-sectional survey data. This has led to a lack of statistical power and the inability to distinguish children born to same-sex parents from children of separated parents. We address these issues by using unique administrative longitudinal data from the Netherlands, which wa…
