  • Gender identity and HIV risk among men who have sex with men in Cape Town, South Africa

Geoffrey Jobson, Alan Tucker et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2018

Gender identity plays a potentially important role contributing to HIV risk among MSM in South Africa. Where studies have included a focus on gender identity, MSM reporting gender non-conformity have been found to have a higher risk of being HIV positive than other MSM. This article examines HIV risk among gender non-conforming MSM in a sample of 316 MSM in Cape Town, South Africa. Reporting gender non-conformity was associated with higher HIV pr…

  • Delivering HIV services in partnership

Open Access•Geoffrey A Jobson, Geoffrey Jobson et al.•ARTICLE•Globalization and Health•2017

BACKGROUND: The involvement of Global Health Initiatives (GHIs) in delivering health services in low and middle income countries (LMICs) depends on effective collaborative working at scales from the local to the international, and a single GHI is effectively constructed of multiple collaborations. Research is needed focusing on how collaboration functions in GHIs at the level of health service management. Here, collaboration between local impleme…

  • HIV risk and prevention among men who have sex with men in rural South Africa

Kabelo Maleke, Nosipho Faith Makhakhe et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2017

Rural South African men who have sex with men (MSM) are likely to be underserved in terms of access to relevant healthcare and HIV prevention services. While research in urban and peri-urban MSM populations has identified a range of factors affecting HIV risk in South African MSM, very little research is available that examines HIV risk and prevention in rural MSM populations. This exploratory study begins to address this lack by assessing percep…

  • Sexual behaviour of women in rural South Africa

Open Access•Jan Henk Dubbink, Lisette van der Eem et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

This study provides insight into women's sexual behaviour in a rural South African region. There are important differences in sexual behaviour by age group and ethnicity and HIV status; these should be taken into account when designing tailor-made prevention packages

  • Knowledge, Attitudes and Beliefs regarding Post Exposure Prophylaxis among South African Men who have Sex with Men

Open Access•J M Hugo, Ron Stall et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2016

  • Homophobic stigma, depression, self-efficacy and unprotected anal intercourse for peri-urban township men who have sex with men in Cape Town, South Africa

Alan Tucker, Andrew Tucker et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2014

While research now highlights that men who have sex with men (MSM) in places such as South Africa are at particular risk of HIV infection, left relatively unexplored are potential relationships between one of the most pressing social issues affecting peri-urban MSM - namely homophobic stigma - and sexual risk-taking behaviour. Drawing on research from the Ukwazana baseline study of 316 township MSM in Cape Town we examine how homophobic stigma re…

  • Minority Stress in the Lives of Men Who Have Sex With Men in Cape Town, South Africa

    Ayesha Mcadams-Mahmoud, Rob Stephenson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2014•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 39

The mental health outcomes of men who have sex with men (MSM) living in sub-Saharan Africa are understudied, despite evidence that discrimination and stigma are widespread. This article examines the occurrence and mental health effects of minority stress in a sample of diverse South African MSM. Twenty-two MSM living in Cape Town took part in exploratory qualitative in-depth interviews and completed mental health questionnaires. Results indicate …

  • An exploration into the role of depression and self-efficacy on township men who have sex with men's ability to engage in safer sexual practices

Alan Tucker, Andrew Tucker et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2013

Men who have sex with men (MSM) in South Africa remain at particular risk of HIV infection. The Ukwazana baseline survey is the first to explore this risk in relation to psychological factors associated with unprotected anal intercourse (UAI). A cohort of 316 MSM from township peri-urban Cape Town took part in the survey. The survey found that 55.2% had engaged in UAI over the preceding 6 months. Depression was significantly associated with UAI. …

  • Transgender in Africa

    Open Access•Geoffrey A Jobson, Geoffrey Jobson et al.•ARTICLE•SAHARA-J Journal of Social…•2012•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 1

Transgender people are an important key population for HIV risk globally, and several studies have found HIV prevalence rates in transgender populations that are significantly higher than those among other key populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM). There is a lack of research on transgender populations in Africa, and at present, there is almost no data available on HIV prevalence and risk among transgender people on the continent. I…

  • Narratives of Masculinity in the Daily Sun

Open Access•A Gibbs, Geoffrey Jobson et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•2011•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 40

Dominant and hegemonic masculinities typically place women and men at risk of contracting HIV through reinforcing gender inequalities. Challenging these masculinities is increasingly seen as a precondition for tackling HIV&AIDS. Narratives of masculinity are the symbolic tools, which men draw upon to construct their social identities. Understanding the composition of these narratives of masculinity is central for understanding how narratives of m…

  • The effects of gender and socioeconomic status on youth sexual-risknorms

Michael Rogan, Michaela Hynie et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2010

HIV and AIDS remains one of the most serious problems facing youths in many sub-Saharan African countries. Among young people in South Africa, gender is linked with a number of HIV-risk behaviours and outcomes. The literature suggests that factors such as socioeconomic status, intimate partner violence, and several psychosocial factors contribute to gendered differences in sexual behaviour among youths in South Africa. However, the existing body …

  • Changing masculinities

    Geoffrey Jobson•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2010

Engaging men in work towards gender equality is a critical aspect of gender and development. However, there are few documented grassroots-level approaches to undertaking such work. This paper argues that context specific stresses on local constructions of masculinity, such as unemployment, poverty and high HIV prevalence, may provide useful entry points for work with men towards gender equality. While these stresses may act to undermine men's abi…
