Re-interpreting Elián González: The Puzzles of the Cultural Complex
This article has two parts. The first part compares two Jungian interpretations of the Elián González affair in 1999 in which a family custody battle metastasized into a Cuba-U.S. international event. Encountering the Alien: Gadamer and transformation in pedagogy
For Gadamer, understanding moves between two different levels. One is the everyday ontological level in which there is a meeting between the familiar and the alien, between the known and the not‐quite‐expected. In 1985 David Booth wrote a seminal article in which he argued that development theory, mostly Marxist but also modernisation theory, was out of touch with reality, incapable of generating viable policy, and riven with meta-theoretical errors.
