  • Multiple ways to bend the curve of biodiversity loss

Open Access•Marion Mehring, Anna S Brietzke et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2024

Humans are significantly impacting ecosystems worldwide. Scientists of the IPBES Global Assessment are therefore calling for a transformative change that includes all aspects of society in order to address drivers of biodiversity loss. However, these calls are rather abstract, and thus it remains unclear how this goal can be achieved. With this conceptual contribution, we present an analytical framework for evaluating existing processes of societ…

  • Improving governance outcomes for water quality

Open Access•Jennifer Ball, Jennifer Hauck et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2022

Globally important chalk streams in England are in poor ecological health, in part due to inadequate water quality. Addressing this issue requires an understanding of the governance systems that surround water quality. The complexity and uncertainty inherent in hydrological systems has led to the emergence of integrated and adaptive forms of governance. In these multi‐actor governance systems, the structure of the relationships between actors (th…

  • Managing spatial sustainability trade-offs

    Open Access•Paul Lehmann, Kathrin Ammermann et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2021•Referencias: 1

The deployment of onshore wind power involves spatial sustainability trade-offs, e.g., between the minimization of energy system costs, the mitigation of impacts on humans and biodiversity, and equity concerns. We analyze challenges arising for decision-making if wind power generation capacity has to be allocated spatially in the presence of such trade-offs. The analysis is based on a game developed for and played by stakeholders in Germany. The …

  • Developing multiscale and integrative nature–people scenarios using the Nature Futures Framework

Open Access•Laura Pereira, Kathryn K Davies et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2020

Scientists have repeatedly argued that transformative, multiscale global scenarios are needed as tools in the quest to halt the decline of biodiversity and achieve sustainability goals. As a first step towards achieving this, the researchers who participated in the scenarios and models expert group of the Intergovernmental Science‐Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) entered into an iterative, participatory process that …

  • Agroforestry governance for operationalising the landscape approach

    Open Access•Yves Zinngrebe, Elena Borasino et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2020•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 11

The expansion and intensification of agriculture as well as the associated land clearing are threatening both biodiversity and human wellbeing in tropical areas. Implementing agroforestry systems through a landscape approach has a strong potential for integrating nature conservation objectives into agricultural systems. A key challenge for implementing the landscape approach is that political processes and conservation initiatives operate in ‘sil…

  • Towards a National Ecosystem Assessment in Germany

Christian Albert, Carsten Neßhöver et al.•ARTICLE•GAIA - Ecological Perspectives…•2017

We present options for a National Ecosystem Assessment in Germany (NEA-DE) that could inform decision-makers on the state and trends of ecosystems and ecosystem services. Characterizing a NEA-DE, we argue that its cross-sectoral, integrative approach would have the advantages of increased scientific understanding, addressing specific policy questions and creating science-policy dialogues. Challenges include objections against a utilitarian perspe…

We present a conceptual framework for the development of scenarios to integrate the objectives of different stakeholder groups. Based on the framework, land-use scenarios were developed to provide a common base for further research. At the same time, these scenarios assisted regional stakeholders to bring forward their concerns and arrive at a s…
