Parental insights into the benefits and feasibility of community-based music enrichment programs for children in economically disadvantaged areas
Children from disadvantaged backgrounds have an elevated risk for poor health and developmental outcomes. Families are less likely to participate in interventions if they feel they have been targeted because they fit a particular demographic profile. There is a need for interventions that can engage families from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Community-based music enrichment (CBME) programs support a strength-based approach by drawing upon famil…
HIV Testing in African American Churches
To examine effects of a multilevel, religiously-tailored HIV testing intervention, Taking It to the Pews (TIPS), on receipt of HIV testing with African American church-affiliated populations, 14 African American churches (N = 1,491) were randomized to TIPS or a multilevel, non-tailored HIV education attention-control arm in a cluster-randomized trial (Kansas City urban area, 2013 to 2019). Receipt of an HIV test was examined using objective data …

Cost-effectiveness of Lifestyle Africa
Background Lifestyle Africa is an adapted version of the Diabetes Prevention Program designed for delivery by community health workers to socioeconomically disadvantaged populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Results from the Lifestyle Africa trial conducted in an under-resourced community in South Africa indicated that the programme had a significant effect on reducing haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c).Objective To estimate the cost of i…
Implementing text-messaging to support and enhance delivery of health behavior change interventions in low- to middle-income countries
The prevalence of non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, is rising in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Health behavior change (HBC) interventions such as the widely used Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) are effective at reducing chronic disease risk, but have not been adapted for LMICs. Leveraging mobile health (mHealth) technology such as text messaging (SMS) to enhance reach and participant engagement …
Covid-19 Testing in African American Churches Using a Faith–Health– Academic Partnership
Increasing access to COVID-19 testing in influential, accessible community settings is needed to address COVID-19 disparities among African Americans. We describe COVID-19 testing intervention approaches conducted in Kansas City, Missouri, African American churches via a faith–health–academic partnership. Trained faith leaders promoted COVID-19 testing with church and community members by implementing multilevel interventions using a tailored too…
Stress, Depression and Quit Attempt Outcomes among Unmotivated Smokers
Introduction Stress and depressive symptoms have been linked to a reduced likelihood of sustaining smoking cessation. Because stress and depressive symptoms may negatively affect motivation to quit, stress and depression may also be important for whether or not smokers make a quit attempt. Objective To examine the relationship between perceived stress and depressive symptoms and initiating a quit attempt in a smoking cessation induction trial.Meth…
Feasibility and Effectiveness of Recruiting Latinos in Decídetexto—A Smoking Cessation Clinical Trial from an Emergency Department Patient Registry
There is an underrepresentation of Latinos in smoking cessation clinical trials. This study describes the feasibility and effectiveness of recruiting Latino smokers in the U.S. from an emergency department (ED) patient registry into a randomized smoking cessation clinical trial. Recruitment occurred from the Hackensack University Medical Center ED. Potential participants were contacted from a patient registry. The primary outcome was whether the …
Feasibility and Acceptability of a Culturally- and Linguistically-Adapted Smoking Cessation Text Messaging Intervention for Latino Smokers
Objective: Assess the feasibility and acceptability of a culturally- and linguistically-adapted smoking cessation text messaging intervention for Latino smokers. Methods: Using a community-based strategy, 50 Latino smokers were recruited to participate in a smoking cessation pilot study. Participants received a 12-week text messaging intervention and were offered Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) at no cost. We assessed biochemically verified ab…
Mechanisms of Motivational Interviewing for Antiretroviral Medication Adherence in People with HIV
Antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV requires strict regimen adherence. Motivational interviewing (MI) can improve ART adherence. MI process studies have rarely focussed on ART adherence. Such studies may facilitate MI modifications to improve outcomes. This study employed a single group pre and post-test design with 62 adults with HIV (16 female; mean age 40 years). Therapist use of MI-consistent (MICO) methods, MI spirit, and client change and …
Dietary Intake Among Church-Affiliated African Americans
Diabetes and heart disease disproportionately burden African Americans, who tend to have worse nutritional intake than Whites. Many Black churches are influential institutions in the Black community, with potential to assist with promotion of healthy eating behaviors. The purpose of the current study was to use the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to examine intention to eat a healthy diet and dietary behaviors among church-affiliated African Ame…

Relationship of autonomy social support to quitting motivation in diverse smokers
Support from family and friends may promote autonomous reasons to quit among diverse smokers. Research is needed to assess the role of social support in the pre-quitting phases among racial and socio-economically diverse populations
The Relationship Between ART Adherence and Smoking Status Among HIV+ Individuals
A Randomized Controlled Trial Examining the Efficacy of Motivational Counseling with Observed Therapy for Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence
This study determined whether motivational interviewing-based cognitive behavioral therapy (MI-CBT) adherence counseling combined with modified directly observed therapy (MI-CBT/mDOT) is more effective than MI-CBT counseling alone or standard care (SC) in increasing adherence over time. A three-armed randomized controlled 48-week trial with continuous electronic drug monitored adherence was conducted by randomly assigning 204 HIV-positive partici…

Change in self-efficacy, autonomous and controlled motivation predicting smoking
Although motivational interviewing (MI) has been shown to be effective in changing health behaviors, its effects on smoking cessation have been mixed. The purpose of the present study is to assess factors of motivation and self-efficacy as they mediate the relationship between MI and smoking cessation. This is a secondary analysis of an MI based smoking cessation randomized trial. MI counseling was associated with change in smoking behaviors duri…
A comparison of autonomous regulation and negative self-evaluative emotions as predictors of smoking behavior change among college students
This study compared autonomous self-regulation and negative self-evaluative emotions as predictors of smoking behavior change in college student smokers ( N = 303) in a smoking cessation intervention study. Although the two constructs were moderately correlated, latent growth curve modeling revealed that only autonomous regulation, but not negative self-evaluative emotions, was negatively related to the number of days smoked. Results suggest that…
Autonomous Regulation and Locus of Control as Predictors of Antiretroviral Medication Adherence
The purpose of the current study was to examine the interrelationships between autonomous regulation (AR) and locus of control (LOC) and their prediction of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) adherence among 189 HIV+ patients. Path analyses revealed that neither AR nor LOC directly predicted adherence although AR was indirectly related when mediated by self-efficacy. AR was positively related to internal and doctors LOC, but not related to chance or ot…
