  • Teleological language or teleological thinking

Open Access•Taru Tiililä, Antje Schlottmann et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2026

The endorsement of teleological statements about natural phenomena - such as "the Earth has an ozone layer in order to protect it from UV light" - is often interpreted as evidence for 'promiscuous teleology': an intuitive tendency to view nature as agentive or intentional. We argue instead that teleological statements are semantically ambiguous and propose a framework distinguishing three interpretive levels: attribution of a relation, attributio…

  • Wild views on sale

    Open Access•Antje Schlottmann, Olivier Graefe•ARTICLE•Globalizations•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 37

Nature conservation in Namibia today depends on the commercialization of wildlife, which combines conservation efforts with touristic and thus market-oriented targets. In our paper, we frame this trade as an economy of the visual, in which the production of visual encounter value and the sale of particular visual experiences with wild animals are essential. Employing a 'posthuman political ecology of the visual' we critically analyze guided game …

  • Contested conservation – neglected corporeality

    Open Access•Robert Pütz, Antje Schlottmann•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2020

This paper is concerned with a herd of wild horses that struggles to survive in the Namib Desert. This case, we argue, reveals ambivalences and critical paradoxes that go along with putting nature–culture dualisms into conservation practice. At the same time, we argue that there are aspects of bio-power involved which cannot be understood properly without taking into account the sphere of the body. We hence analyse in detail the “struggles over n…

  • Children's reasoning about continuous causal processes

    Open Access•Selma Dündar‐Coecke, Hadi Purwanto et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2020•Referencias: 27

Reasoning about continuous processes is within the capacity of children from school entry, even using verbal reports, though they find it easier to address more rapid processes. Mechanism inference is uncommon, with non-verbal ability an important influence on progress. Our research is the first to highlight this key factor in children's progress towards thinking about scientific phenomena

  • Visuality

    Open Access•Antje Schlottmann•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2016

Visuality and its interrelation with the spatial has become an emerging field for critical scholarly research after the visual turn in geography. Employing diverse epistemological concepts, a variety of research perspectives can be identified, ranging from the iconographic analysis of visual media to critical cartography and, quite recently, to nonrepresentational performative approaches to visuality as an embodied material practice. In geography…

Spatial assumptions, mostly taken for granted in mediated and face-to-face language use, both represent and constitute social reality. How, though, do their hidden logics work in detail? What are their respective imaginative effects and functions? And, in view of their involvement in discourses of discrimination, are they dispensable? By using the press coverage of the German reunification as a case study, I discuss the social embeddedness and ma…

  • The making of mitteldeutschland. on the function of implicit and explicit symbolic features for implementing regions and regional identity

Tilo Felgenhauer, Mandy Mihm et al.•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series B…•2005•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 13

According to the theory of ‘significative regionalisation’ (Werlen), territorial entities may be understood as products of symbolic practices. However, the assumption that regions are not only made but also continuously performed in acts of communication effects the character of substantial research into ostensible and latent spatial imaginations apparent in communication processes. In this article, the reactivation of Mitteldeutschland (literall…

  • Children's judgements of gambles

    Open Access•Antje Schlottmann, Anne Schlottmann•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•2000•Referencias: 5

Violations of utility are often attributed to people's differential reactions to risk versus certainty or uncertainty, or more generally to the way that people perceive outcomes and consequences. However, a core feature of utility is additivity, and violations may also occur because of averaging effects. Averaging is pervasive in intuitive riskless judgement throughout many domains, as shown with Anderson's Information Integration approach. The p…

  • Children's judgments of expected value

Antje Schlottmann, Anne Schlottmann et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1994•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 2

Expected value judgments of 5-, 6-, 8-, and 10-year-olds were studied by using an information integration approach. Children saw roulette-type games with prizes of crayons. They made judgments on a continuous scale of how happy a puppet playing the game would be. In one task, probability and value of a single winning outcome were varied factorially. All ages took both cues into account. Young children used an additive integration rule, whereas ch…
