  • The Standing Stone of Velmaio (Varese, North-Western Lombardy, Italy). From an Erratic Boulder to a Megalith

Open Access•C Scapozza, Christian Ambrosi et al.•ARTICLE•Open Quaternary•2024

A standing stone was found near Velmaio (Italy), on the valley floor of the Torrente Bévera. The analysis of its morphology and of traces on its surface on all faces showed that the block is not in an original position but was placed later in its vertical position. The standing stone is made of a dolomite breccia. The texture and, in particular, the lithological composition of the breccia corresponds to that of the Invorio Breccia known only from…

  • Large landslides in the Alpine valleys of the Giudicarie and Schio-Vicenza tectonic domains (NE Italy)

Open Access•Alfio Viganò, Sandro Rossato et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2021

A comprehensive geomorphological and structural mapping of the largest landslides in the central-eastern Southern Alps (NE Italy) is presented. Their occurrence in this Alpine sector is discussed in relation with structural geological features (bedding and faults), which are largely conditioned by the Giudicarie and Schio-Vicenza regional fault systems. Tectonic rock damaging here coexists with high relief stored energy and active deformation, wh…

  • Transformation of high-relief canyon topography by an ancient rock avalanche, Hop Valley, Zion National Park, Utah, USA

    Open Access•Anna Stańczyk, Jeffrey R Moore et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Referencias: 5

Zion National Park preserves a rich geological record of Holocene landslide-dammed canyons in its deeply incised topography, with 11 hypothesized valley-blocking deposits within the park boundaries. Despite consistent stratigraphic, tectonic, and climatic settings, the occurrence of and subsequent landscape response to these natural dams varies. As such, the region provides a unique natural laboratory for quantifying the effect and evolution of l…

  • Piecing together the Lateglacial advance phases of the Reussgletscher (central Swiss Alps)

    Open Access•Max Boxleitner, Ivy-Och et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2018

Exposure dating has substantially improved our knowledge about glacier advances during the Younger Dryas (YD) and the early Holocene. The glacier development after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and the timing of morphologically evidenced, earlier Lateglacial re-advances is, however, still widely unknown. In this study we used 10Be surface exposure and radiocarbon dating to address these phases and corresponding landforms in the catchment of the …

  • Recent developments in Quaternary dating methods

    Open Access•I Hajdas, Ivy-Och et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2008

An overview of methods to numerically date continental Quaternary deposits is provided including radiocarbon, Uranium series, cosmogenic nuclides, luminescence and electron spin resonance. Physical background and methodology are briefly described and potential problems as well as recent developments in the field are highlighted

  • Glaciar León, Chilean Patagonia

    Open Access•Stephan Harrison, Neil F Glasser et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2008•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 7

Glaciar León is a temperate, grounded outlet of the eastern North Patagonian Icefield (NPI). It terminates at an active calving margin in Lago Leones, a 10 km long proglacial lake. We take a multidisciplinary approach to its description and use ASTER imagery and clast sedimentology to describe the geomorphology of the glacier and its associated moraines. We date periods of glacier retreat over the last 2500 years using a combination of lichenomet…

  • Late Pleistocene glacial chronology of the Pietrele Valley, Retezat Mountains, Southern Carpathians constrained by 10Be exposure ages and pedological investigations

    Open Access•Anne U Reuther, Petru Urdea et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2007

  • Evidence from the Rio Bayo valley on the extent of the North Patagonian Icefield during the Late Pleistocene–Holocene Transition

    Open Access•Neil F Glasser, Stephan Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

This paper presents data on the extent of the North Patagonian Icefield during the Late Pleistocene–Holocene transition using cosmogenic nuclide exposure age and optically stimulated luminescence dating. We describe geomorphological and geochronological evidence for glacier extent in one of the major valleys surrounding the North Patagonian Icefield, the Rio Bayo valley. Geomorphological mapping provides evidence for the existence of two types of…

  • Surface exposure dating of moraines in the Kromer valley (Silvretta Mountains, Austria)-evidence for glacial response to the 8.2 ka event in the Eastern Alps

Open Access•Hanns Kerschner, Andreas Hertl et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2006

10 Be dating of a pronounced glacier advance (‘Kromer Stadial’) in the western part of the Silvretta Mountains (western Austria) yielded ages ranging from 8010±360 to 8690±410 years with a mean age for moraine stabilization of 8410±690 years. Hence, the Kromer Stadial, which was previously considered as early Preboreal, may represent the glacier response to the early phase of the ‘8.2-ka event’, as it is recorded in the Greenland ice-cores. The g…
