Teachers’ didactic approaches to students’ resistance in Environmental and Sustainability Education
In this study, we investigate teachers’ experiences of students’ resistance in Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) and how they have handled it. This article is based on qualitative interviews with nine secondary-school teachers in Sweden. By drawing on Dewey’s concept of experience and Nordic/German Didaktik theory, we place teachers’ autonomy and professional judgement at the centre of the analysis to explore their experiences and …
The existential and the instrumental in Environmental and Sustainability Education
In this theoretical paper, we argue that ESE is caught between the existential dimension of its content and the instrumentalisation of the education system in which it operates. We argue that the tension between the existential dimension and instrumentalism manifests in five aspects of ESE, which direct ESE in profoundly different directions. We build our understanding of the existential dimension in ESE on Karl Jaspers’ (1883–1969) existential p…
Revisiting the political in environmental and sustainability education – a global justice-oriented approach
This paper revisits and expands a decade-old call to engage the political dimensions of environmental and sustainability education (ESE). With intensifying climate impacts and widening global inequities, global justice has become central to ESE. Climate change is not only a scientific concern but a lived reality shaped by colonial legacies, structural inequalities, and power imbalances. Drawing on critical global citizenship education (GCE) and e…
Resisting sustainable development
Society is currently facing and experiencing a fundamental environmental and social climate-related crisis.Despite this, many groups in society are either opposed to or sceptical about various sustainability reforms, research on the climate crisis and other environmental issues. This article aims to clarify the underlying logic of how and why some young people express resistance, and how habits, values and identity contribute to negative emotions …
A transactional methodology for analysing learning
Investigating learning in ongoing classroom practices involves a number of methodological challenges. One main challenge, identified by scholars in sociocultural approaches, is how to take both the individual and the environment into consideration in analyses. Although the challenge we are addressing are methodological in character, the work of coming up with a transactional methodology requires philosophical and theoretical clarifications and he…
Pluralistic environmental and sustainability education – a scholarly review
In this scholarly review we critically discuss the last 30 years of research on pluralism in environmental and sustainability education (ESE). Pluralism has been a focal point for a vast amount of theoretical and empirical studies in the research field. Since the journal Environmental Education Research (EER) was established, 158 articles have been published that to some extend refer to pluralism or pluralistic ESE. In this review we analyse the …
The meanings of friluftsliv in Physical Education Teacher Education
The aim with this article is to contribute knowledge about the meanings of friluftsliv in educational practice. This is done by investigating what friluftsliv becomes in the ongoing practices of PETE in Sweden and how these meanings are established in the studied activities. The empirical material consists of different kinds of material from friluftsliv activities in PETE programmes: study guides, field trip plans, students’ vlogs from overnight …
A transactional model of moral learning – how to challenge unsustainable denials
This article draws on a philosophical critique of the problems of denial in the face of the climate crisis and the call for an education that deals with the root causes of social and environmental injustice in depth. To respond to this radical critique in concrete educational practice, there is a need for an understanding of moral learning that also considers the problems of denial and the role of the teacher in these learning processes. We there…
Experiences of intrinsic values in education for older adults
This study aims to acquire more knowledge about the meaning of intrinsic values in organised post-work non-formal educational activities for older adults. Observations and focus group interviews were conducted at a senior university in Sweden. John Dewey’s concept of experience and theory of value are used to facilitate a deeper understanding of the intrinsic values that were identified. The results of the study demonstrate what intrinsic val…
Museum education and sustainable development
The question of how sustainability can be incorporated into all areas of society encourages museums to rethink their approaches to society and education. In this article, we argue that museums have the potential to become key public pedagogies for sustainable development and thereby play a crucial role in encouraging participation in sustainability issues. Due to the complexity of sustainability issues, and the potential disturbances of and diffi…
Schooling and ESE
Environmental and sustainability education (ESE) consists of topical existential and ethical issues. At the same time, these issues are taught in a school setting that is shaped by assignments, grades, and school tasks. The relationships between structures of formal education in a school environment and the characteristics of ESE has been described in dichotomous terms as a contradiction, known in the ESE research field as “Stevenson’s gap”, afte…
A review of research on the relationship between learning and health for older adults
Previous studies have demonstrated that there is a positive relationship between learning activities and health in general and that learning has a positive impact on the psychological, mental and social aspects of health. Despite this, there are still unanswered questions about the relationship between and the concepts of health and learning. The aim of this review has been to map and synthesise research on the relationship between learning and h…
Conditions for Transformative Learning for Sustainable Development
Continued unsustainability and surpassed planetary boundaries require not only scientific and technological advances, but deep and enduring social and cultural changes. The purpose of this article is to contribute a theoretical approach to understand conditions and constraints for societal change towards sustainable development. In order to break with unsustainable norms, habits, practices, and structures, there is a need for learning for transfo…
A posthuman approach to human-animal relationships
This paper contributes to the debate about the absence of nonhuman animals (The term ‘nonhuman animal’ is used to emphasise the interconnection with the human being, viewed as a human animal. Using this terminology does not avoid a homogenising, stereotyping and simplifying of a multiplicity of animal (and human) beings. Nonetheless, we think that such a ‘simplification’ of concepts is inescapable in academic discussions concerning humans and non…
Young people’s conversations about environmental and sustainability issues in social media
Young people's conversations about environmental and sustainability issues in social media and their educational implications are under-researched. Understanding young people's meaning-making in social media and the experiences they acquire could help teachers to stage pluralistic and participatory approaches to classroom discussions about the environment and sustainability. The aim of the article is to explore the characteristics of meaning-maki…

Logics of business education for sustainability
This paper explores various kinds of logics of ‘business education for sustainability’ and how these ‘logics’ position the subject business person, based on eight teachers’ reasoning of their own practices. The concept of logics developed within a discourse theoretical framework is employed to analyse the teachers’ reasoning. The analysis takes its starting point in different approaches to how a business ought to or could take responsibility for …
The role of knowledge in participatory and pluralistic approaches to ESE
The purpose of this article is to investigate in situ the functions that knowledge has when used by students in argumentative discussions. The study is based on Dewey’s pragmatic perspective of knowledge, which means that knowledge gets its meaning in the activity at hand. The analyses are conducted using Transactional Argumentation Analysis, which is a combination of pragmatic meaning analysis and Toulmin’s argument pattern. The empirical materi…
On the need to repoliticise environmental and sustainability education
This article draws attention to the possibilities of the ongoing philosophical discussion about cosmopolitan universal values in relation to the normative challenges in environmental and sustainability education (ESE). The purpose of this paper is to clarify the philosophical problems of addressing universally sustainable responsibilities and values in ESE. Our arguments draw inspiration from the work of three poststructuralist scholars: we explo…
An environmental ethical conceptual framework for research on sustainability and environmental education
This article suggests that environmental ethics can have great relevance for environmental ethical content analyses in environmental education and education for sustainable development research. It is based on a critique that existing educational research does not reflect the variety of environmental ethical theories. Accordingly, we suggest an alternative and more nuanced environmental ethical conceptual framework divided into Value-oriented Env…
Participatory approach in practice
Many authors have claimed that participatory perspectives should be a significant feature of environmental and sustainability education (ESE). This change in ESE practice implies a relocation of the process of environmental knowledge constitution from ‘before’ to ‘in’ the educational event. The aim of this paper is to clarify both the processes of knowledge constitution and the content of the constituted knowledge within participatory ESE practic…
Investigating learning in physical education—a transactional approach
The purpose of this paper is to suggest and describe a methodological approach for studies of learning within school physical education (PE) in order to investigate and clarify issues of learning in an embodied practice. Drawing on John Dewey's work, and especially his use of the concept transaction, a transactional approach is suggested as a way of developing an action-orientated method necessary for investigating learning in PE. The approach is…

Pluralism in practice – experiences from Swedish evaluation, school development and research
Educational potentials of encounters with nature
Direct encounters with the natural environment have a long tradition in environmental education. Given that the role and character of these encounters are shaped by the approach taken to environmental or sustainability education, there is a risk that a shift towards pluralistic and political approaches will lead to a neglect of nature encounters. On the basis of an analysis of Swedish/Scandinavian outdoor and environmental history and current Swe…

Pluralism and criticism in environmental education and education for sustainable development
Education is presented with a challenge when faced with criticism of modern science and adoption of a pluralistic view of environmental education and education for sustainable development. In dealing with this challenge, a practical understanding inspired by the later works of Ludwig Wittgenstein is suggested as a complement to more traditional theoretical and analytical responses. Through reminders of how criticism appears in everyday practice, …
