This study examines the personal perceptions and aspirations of 187 students studying at two universities in Syracuse, New York during the spring of 1992. The Cantril Self-Anchoring Striving Scale is used to determine the best and worst possible outcomes for themselves, the United States, and Europe. The joint or combined effects of age level, sex differences, and social factors in fear of crime are systematically investigated using elaboration analysis with 1976 NORC data. An examination and comparison of two competing interpretations of generational conflict—the Eisenstadt‐Parsons functionalist model and the generational unit model of Mannheim—reveals that the generational unit model provides more theoretical and empirical opportunities for investigation that the functionalist model.
