  • A response to te Nijenhuis et al . (2019)

    Open Access•James R Flynn•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2019

Te Nijenhuis et al . (2019) cite studies that show that training on cognitive tasks produces the largest standardized gains on the easiest items and the smallest standardized gains on the most difficult items. They note that this creates an anti-Jensen effect, and use this as a trump that is supposed to show that my basketball examples are irrelevant. I use a new basketball example that is compatible with those studies. It assumes that at some po…

  • A final reply to te Nijenhuis et al . (2019)

    Open Access•James R Flynn•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2019

The effects of educational training are only one case of producing two groups (before and after) separated by IQ test performance on easier and harder items. The crux of the issue is whether we know that the causes between groups are genetic if they are differentiated by a Jensen effect and that the causes are environmental if they are differentiated by an anti-Jensen effect. A Jensen effect occurs when the two groups differ more as cognitive tas…

  • Tethering the elephant

    James R Flynn•ARTICLE•Psychology Public Policy and Law•2006

Capital offenders cannot be executed if they are mentally retarded. Therefore, the IQ scores of offenders are important, and the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals has held that the Flynn effect is relevant to interpreting their IQ scores. The Flynn effect (IQ gains over time) means that different IQ tests will give different scores purely as a result of when the tests were normed. Because execution must not be a random result of what test defenda…

  • Heritability estimates versus large environmental effects

    William T Dickens, James R Flynn•ARTICLE•Psychological Review•2001

Some argue that the high heritability of IQ renders purely environmental explanations for large IQ differences between groups implausible. Yet, large environmentally induced IQ gains between generations suggest an important role for environment in shaping IQ. The authors present a formal model of the process determining IQ in which people's IQs are affected by both environment and genes, but in which their environments are matched to their IQs. T…

  • The hidden history of IQ and special education

    James R Flynn•ARTICLE•Psychology Public Policy and Law•2000•Referencias: 7

Over the last 50 years, IQ gains and renorming tests have radically altered the percentage of Americans with IQs below 70. Moreover, the criterion for mental retardation was altered from 70, normed against Whites only, to 70, normed against all Americans. In fact, the proportion eligible to be classified as mentally retarded has varied from a high of 1 in 23 to a low of 1 in 213. These enormous fluctuations in the past engendered no response from…

  • Searching for justice

    James R Flynn•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•1999

Humane-egalitarian ideals, whose aims are group justice and reducing environmental inequality and privilege, must be tested against reality, as revealed by psychology and other social sciences. Four issues are addressed: the equation between IQ and intelligence, whether group potential is determined by a group's mean IQ, whether the Black-White IQ gap is genetic, and the meritocratic thesis that genes for IQ will become highly correlated with cla…

  • Israeli Military Iq Tests

    Open Access•James R Flynn•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1998

From 1971 to 1984, the Israeli Defence Forces administered two tests unaltered that qualify as IQ tests. These were the Matrices and the Instructions tests. The former is an adaptation of Raven's Progressive Matrices, similar to the original in that there are clusters with progressive difficulty and an escalation of difficulty throughout the test. The raw score range is from 4 to 35. The Instructions test is adapted from the old US Army Alpha Ins…

  • Group differences

    Open Access•James R Flynn•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1996

‘From a black perspective...the notion that a black (who passes for white) might reclaim his ethnic identity to take advantage of preferential admissions can only trigger an almost inexpressible sense of outrage.’ (Livingston, 1979) ‘Turning an elephant loose in a crowd offers everyone, except the beast and his rider, equal opportunities of being trampled.’ (Tawney, 1931)

  • Massive IQ gains in 14 nations

    James R Flynn•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1987•Citada por: 69

Data from 14 nations reveal IQ gains ranging from 5 to 25 points in a single generation. Some of the largest gains occur on culturally reduced tests and tests of fluid intelligence. The Norwegian data show that a nation can make significant gains on a culturally reduced test while suffering losses on other tests. The Dutch data prove the existence of unknown environmental factors so potent that they account for 15 of the 20 points gained. The hyp…

  • The mean IQ of Americans

    James R Flynn•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1984•Citada por: 36

This study shows that every Stanford-Binet and Wechsler standardization sample from 1932 to 1978 established norms of a higher standard than its predecessor. The obvious interpretation of this pattern is that representative samples of Americans did better and better on IQ tests over a period of 46 years, the total gain amounting to a rise in mean IQ of 13.8 points. The implications of this finding are developed: The combination of IQ gains and th…
