Abiodun Adewuya, Abiodun O Adewuya et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2026

Background Adolescent substance use disorders represent a critical public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, yet prevalence estimates rely predominantly on self-reported use rather than clinical diagnoses, limiting treatment service planning. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional survey using stratified multistage probability sampling across 47 secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria (September 2017–March 2018). • The Science of Music

    Open Access•Owen Wright•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Studies•2026

The pleasantly informal introduction to this handsomely produced book outlines its contents clearly and sets out its aim: to trace how music as a body of knowledge was inherited from Greek sources and articulated, developed, and valued within Islamic culture. The treatment of such an ambitious project is inevitably selective, and the author chooses to concentrate on two main themes. One is to situate the theory of music within an intellectual con…

  • Unravelling the conundrums of social autopsy for maternal mortality in low- and middle-income countries

Open Access•Aduragbemi Banke-Thomas, Adedoyin Ogunyemi et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Any meaningful effort to tackle maternal mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) needs to be founded on a robust understanding of its causes. In LMICs, verbal autopsies are used to determine the clinical causes of death through interviews with the deceased person’s next-of-kin or caregivers. In addition, social autopsies have been conducted to allow capture of the story behind the death, enabling a comprehensive understanding of the…

  • Challenges in conducting population-based seroepidemiology survey of Covid-19 in Lagos State, Nigeria

Open Access•Adewale Kayode Ojogbede, Tajudeen Akanji Bamidele et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Population-based study is known to be a very essential type of study during and after a pandemic or epidemic, as it provides crucial information on the incidence, prevalence, and risk factors of the disease in question. There has been limited information about the challenges faced in conducting such surveys in Nigeria. In this paper, we will share our experience, and describe the challenges faced in conducting a population-based seroepidemiologic…

  • Use of modern contraceptives in Lagos Nigeria during the Covid-19 pandemic

Owen Wright, Onipede Wusu et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2021

We estimated modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR) and examined predictors of modern contraceptives utilization amongst 1,445 sampled reproductive age women in Lagos (Nigeria's epicenter) during the devastating COVID-19 pandemic. Estimated mCPR was 30.8%. Women aged 20-29 years were 50% (95%CI:0.37-0.71) less likely to use modern contraceptives during the pandemic than those 30-39 years. Married and divorced women were about three (95%CI:1.…

  • An assessment of geographical access and factors influencing travel time to emergency obstetric care in the urban state of Lagos, Nigeria

Open Access•Aduragbemi Banke-Thomas, Kerry LM Wong et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2021

Previous efforts to estimate the travel time to comprehensive emergency obstetric care (CEmOC) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have either been based on spatial models or self-reported travel time, both with known inaccuracies. The study objectives were to estimate more realistic travel times for pregnant women in emergency situations using Google Maps, determine system-level factors that influence travel time and use these estimates …

  • Patterns, travel to care and factors influencing obstetric referral

    Open Access•Aduragbemi Banke-Thomas, Cephas Avoka et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2021•Referencias: 43

The criticality of referral makes it imperative to study its patterns and factors influencing it at a health systems level. This study of referral in Lagos, Nigeria is based on health records of 4181 pregnant women who presented with obstetric emergencies at one of the 24 comprehensive emergency obstetric care (EmOC) facilities in the state between November 2018 and October 2019 complemented with distance and time data extracted from Google Maps.…

  • Persian perspectives

    Open Access•Owen Wright•ARTICLE•rast müzikoloji dergisi•2019

Less well explored than the material supplied by European observers of Ottoman musical practice, that relating to the Safavid realm is nevertheless instructive, both for the glimpses it gives of music as a social activity, especially in Isfahan, of the instruments used, and for what it reveals about the attitudes of the observers. The contributions of two of the most perceptive seventeenth-century European commentators are surveyed here, together…

  • Opinion of women on emergency obstetric care provided in public facilities in Lagos, Nigeria

Owen Wright, Kikelomo Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2016

Limited attention has been given to opinions of women receiving emergency obstetric care (EmOC) in developing countries. We organized focus groups with 39 women who received this care from Lagos public facilities. Availability of competent personnel and equipment were two positive opinions highlighted. Contrarily, women expressed concerns regarding the seeming unresponsiveness of the service to nonmedical aspects of care, associated stress of ser…

It is by no means unknown, in Middle-Eastern art-music traditions, to find claims that a given rhythmic cycle was invented on a particular occasion by a particular musician, the most obvious and reliable instance being provided by ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Marāġī (d. 1435), who tells us that he was commissioned to create a new cycle to commemorate a victory. • "On the Concept of a "Timurid Music

    Owen Wright•ARTICLE•Oriente Moderno•1996•Citada por: 3

As a separate topic, music under the Timurids has received relatively little attention. The Cambridge History of Iran, for example, which has much to say about literature, architecture, painting and the decorative arts during this period, remains resolutely silent, while if we turn to a general historical account of music in Persia such as that provided by Farmer we find that it inevitably becomes just another blurred episode in a continuous line…

Given the nature of the difficulties encountered, it is clear that any generalizations we might wish to derive from them can only be tentative and provisional. Nevertheless, the paucity of comparable material, which on the one hand renders the interpretative hurdles all the more difficul…

    Open Access•Owen Wright•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1995•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

Taking as a yardstick the number of copies made (and commentaries provoked), there can be little doubt that the most influential of all Arabic treatises on music has been thekitāb al-Adwār(referred to henceforth asKA) by Safi al-Dīn 'Abd al-Mu'min b. Yūsuf b. Fākhir al-Urmawī (d. 693/1294). Nevertheless, despite its obvious historical significance, this seminal work still awaits a satisfactory critical edition, one of the most important tasks of …

    Open Access•Owen Wright•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1974•Referencias: 3

These two terms, which occur in the late thirteenth-century Anonymus IV treatise (De mensuris et discantu), have often been cited as evidence of Arab musical influence in Western Europe: either in connexion with developments in melodic style, since they are identified as currentes, or, perhaps more ambitiously, in support of the contention that the emergence of mensural music in Western Europe was prompted by contact with Arab musical practice, w…

  • Music and verse

Open Access•Owen Wright•CHAPTER•Arabic literature to the end of…•1983

Apart from its intrinsic interest, the relationship between music and verse is of particular concern because of the often-mooted possibility that music (and musicians) may have made a significant contribution to the developments that took place in Hijazi poetry during the first/seventh century. But the nature of the relationship is not easy to define with any precision, and some of the problems it raises are singularly intractable. In effect, ear…

  • Çargâh in Turkish classical music

If there has been one dominant, quasi-official theory for Turkish classicalmusic in the second half of the twentieth century, it is that particularlyassociated with Ezgi and Arel. Their notational conventions have becomestandard, supplanting earlier norms, and the framework they developed is theone still employed in recent general accounts of the modal system, whether thesimplified introductory survey of Yilmaz (1983), for example, or the moredet…
