A Heuristic Model for Designing Interventions in Multicultural Mental Health Encounters
In this paper, I develop the integrative concept of "shared experience of sense" as a heuristic model to design interventions in multicultural health encounters in the field of mental health promotion. For this purpose, I use extensive ethnographic material from the Mapuche's territory in Chile, analyzing the interactions between an outpatient community mental health center and deinstitutionalized patients in their home settings. Social Dimensions of Health
In Western medicine the interpretation prevails that mental illness is a psychological and/or biological disorder. Most important concepts in health psychology, such as sense of coherence, self-efficacy, hope, or dispositional optimism are all very cognition and individual centered. The pilot study was to identify organizational challenges that should be addressed before the Ministry implemented a comprehensive occupational health management policy in all departments. Eleven diverse departments were selected to particip…
Drawings by Tanzanian Street Youths
In this article I investigate the life world of children and youths living on the streets of Mwanza, Tanzania's second biggest city. Access to their life world is gained through the drawings of two youths, which I interpret on the basis of my observations and the interviews obtained during a fieldwork. The drawings as mental maps convey information regarding the emotional state of the children and youths by providing a vital insight into the diff…
Theoretical reflections on the life world of Tanzanian street children
In this article I reconstruct the life world (Lebenswelt) of the street children of the Tanzanian city Mwanza from an emic perspective that emphasises meaning-making, in order to depict them as subjects solely responsible for their actions. Accordingly I shall present how two youths conveyed to me, in numerous colour drawings, their everyday urban life, which is associated with their village history. Furthermore I will present some theoretical re…
