Palaeoparasitological evidence from the Medieval Cemetery of Deraheib in the Nubian Desert (Sudan)
The deep evolutionary relationship between humans and intestinal parasites offers opportunities for the reconstruction of diet and living conditions in archaeological populations. Here, the authors identify eggs preserved in sediment adhering to the surface of the sacrum in Muslim burials from the Southern Necropolis at Deraheib (upper reaches of Wadi al-Allaqi, Sudan, ninth–eleventh centuries AD). Species-level identification is suggested based …
Early history of parasitic diseases in northern dogs revealed by dog paleofeces from the 9000-year-old frozen Zhokhov site in the New Siberian Islands of East Siberian Arctic
Using Parasite Analysis to Investigate the Pathoecology of the Inhabitants of the City of Berezov in Western Siberia (Sixteenth–Nineteenth Centuries)
The first Russian settlers developed relatively large cities and a new phenomenon called 'urban habitat' to the north of Western Siberia. This article presents the results of a study on soil samples taken from the cultural layer of Berezov city during excavations of the city's kremlin, or civic centre, posad, or town settlement area, and the farmstead within the posad. The samples are dated from the XVI to the end of the XVIII century. Examinatio…
Results of the Archaeoparasitological Study of the Roman Settlement of Myrmekion
The article presents the findings from an archaeoparasitological study of soil samples collected from the drainage and pavement of the Roman settlement of Myrmekion, located in the modern city of Kerch (Eastern Crimea). The soil samples revealed eggs from four types of intestinal parasites that infect humans and domestic animals. The presence of geohelminth eggs, specifically Trichuris trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides, indicates that the settle…
Results of Archaeoparasitological and Palynological Research Conducted on Cultural Layers of the Artesian Ancient Settlement (Eastern Crimea)
The article presents the results of archaeoparasitological and palynological research of the cultural layers located in the ancient Artesian settlement in the Eastern Crimea. The study revealed the species composition of parasites and palynological spectrum in the cultural layers. Parasite eggs distribution over the layers indicates high content of eggs in almost all periods of the citadel’s existence. High abundance of geohelminth eggs in the st…
Results of Archaeoparasitological and Palynological Analyzes of the Contents of the Sewage Drain of the Chorgun Tower (South-Western Crimea)
The article presents the results of an archaeoparasitological and palynological study of a sample taken from the sewage drain of the Chorgun Tower. This is a fortification on the territory of the village of Chernorechie (South-Western Crimea). According to archaeological research, the construction of the keep dates back to the third quarter of the 15th century. Four types of eggs of intestinal parasites infecting humans and synanthropic animals w…
