  • “It Taught Me How to Love on My Kids”

    Open Access•Antonio R Garcia, V J Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Families in Society The Journal…•2026

Little is known about system-involved fathers’ perceptions of parenting programs, and whether they believe they focus on topics they value. Service providers in family serving systems are positioned to refer fathers to parenting programs, albeit their perspectives of fatherhood are also largely unexplored. To that end, 17 fathers who recently graduated from the 24:7 Dad ® participated in focus groups, whereas 24 service providers completed 1:1 se…

  • “It’s Not Really Geared to Include the Father”

Open Access•Victoria Cook, Antonio R Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Families in Society The Journal…•2026

System-involved fathers face barriers that limit their ability to cultivate healthy relationships with their children. This study examines how fathers describe institutional intersectionality or the hybridity of multiple-system involvement. Focus groups with system-involved fathers ( N = 17) were conducted between 2021 and 2022, following completion of the 24-7 Dad® parenting program. Data were analyzed drawing upon a thematic analysis of hybridi…

    Rafael Perez‐figueroa, Dia J Obonyo et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•2021

Nationally, opioid overdose remains strikingly persistent among people experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Limited information is available about the characteristics of this phenomenon in economically disadvantaged communities of color. This study sought to evaluate the association between key contextual factors and experiencing a non-fatal opioid overdose among people who use heroin in Washington Heights, New York City. We conduct…

  • Acceptability of PrEP Uptake Among Racially/Ethnically Diverse Young Men Who Have Sex With Men

    Rafael Perez‐figueroa, Rafael E Pérez-Figueroa et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Education•2015

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is considered an effective biomedical approach for HIV prevention. However, there is limited understanding of PrEP uptake among racially/ethnically and socioeconomically diverse young men who have sex with men (YMSM). This study examined attitudes and perceptions toward PrEP uptake among YMSM by conducting semistructured interviews with a sample (N = 100) of YMSM in New York City. Thematic analysis was employed to …

  • Toward a Typology of Acculturative Stress

    Open Access•Christopher P Salas-Wright, Eden Hernandez Robles et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic Journal of Behavioral…•2015•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 36

The objective of this study is to identify latent classes of Hispanic immigrants on the basis of acculturative stress and, in turn, examine the links between membership in acculturative stress classes and the prevalence of mental disorders. We use latent class analysis (LCA) and multinomial logistic regression with data from a population-based study of Hispanic immigrants in the United States ( n = 1,630). Classes were identified as “Low Accultur…

  • Age- and education-matched comparison of aging HIV+ men who have sex with men to general population on common neuropsychological assessments

Open Access•Sandra Anne Kupprat, Perry N Halkitis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2015•Referencias: 46

Little is known about the impact of HIV and aging on cognitive functioning. This New York City cross-sectional study of aging HIV-positive gay and bisexual men assessed their neuropsychological state. Working memory and verbal abstract reasoning were relatively intact. After 55 years of age, attention abilities were impaired. Executive function impairment was present regardless of age and education. Results suggest the need for HIV-specific norms…

  • Moving Toward a Holistic Conceptual Framework for Understanding Healthy Aging Among Gay Men

    Perry N Halkitis, Farzana Kapadia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2015•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 64

In the last four decades, we have witnessed vast and important transitions in the social, economic, political, and health contexts of the lived experiences of gay men in the United States. This dynamic period, as evidenced most prominently by the transition of the gay rights movement to a civil rights movement, has shifted the exploration of gay men's health from one focusing primarily on HIV/AIDS into a mainstream consideration of the overall he…

  • Religiousness, Spirituality, and Existential Well-being Among HIV-Positive Gay, Bisexual, and Other MSM Age 50 and Over

Melvin C Hampton, Perry N Halkitis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion, Spirituality…•2013

The religious and spiritual experiences of HIV-positive gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are severely understudied, especially among those over 50. However, literature supports that religious/spiritual experiences are related to both physical and mental health among older adults. In this exploratory analysis we assessed the relations that exist among a sample of HIV-positive gay, bisexual, and other MSM over 50 in regard t…

  • Evidence for a Syndemic in Aging Hiv-positive Gay, Bisexual, and Other Msm

    Open Access•Perry N Halkitis, Sandra A Kupprat et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Anthropological Practice•2012•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 43

The theory of syndemics has been widely applied in HIV-prevention studies of gay, bisexual, and other MSM (men who have sex with men) over the last decade. Our investigation is the first to consider the applicability of the theory in a sample of aging (ages 50 and over) HIV-positive MSM, which is a growing population in the United States. A sample of 199 men were actively recruited and assessed in terms of mental health and drug-use burden, as we…
