Land Reform, Historical Consciousness and Indigenous Activism in Late Twentieth-Century Ecuador
Studies of the emergence of the Ecuadorian indigenous movement, which burst onto the national political scene in 1990, have not paid enough attention to indigenous historical consciousness. Using historical and ethnographic evidence, this study examines the emergence of historical consciousness among indigenous peasants involved in the land struggle for the Quinchuquí hacienda, in Otavalo, Ecuador. The research demonstrates that it was only durin…
Performativity, Performance, and Indigenous Activism in Ecuador and the Andes
To explain causality between ethnic consciousness and indigenous political activism in the Andes, scholars have proposed two perspectives. Some argue that ethnic consciousness was pre-existing; others claim that it was the product of political organizational processes. In this study, I demonstrate that the ethnic consciousness of Ecuadorian indigenous Andeans has been a dialogical work-in-progress that has hinged significantly on the emergence of…
Imagining Ecuadorians
In 1955, a monument to Inca warrior Rumiñahui was erected in Otavalo’s central plaza. In this article, I study the ways in which competing imaginings of the Ecuadorian nation have shaped the material and symbolic trajectory of the monument. The monument was the outcome of a struggle for hegemony between nonindigenous elites. The current appropriation of the monument by the local indigenous population, however, is at odds with the ideological purp…
Othering theMestizo
Most lines of work explaining the emergence of indigenous political activism in the Ecuadorian highlands have not paid enough explicit attention to indigenous political subjectivity, even when stressing the emergence of a new political actor. In this paper, it is argued that indígenas in Otavalo, during the 1970s and 1980, were able to challenge the construction of social identification, articulating an indigenous critique of mestizo personhood. …
