  • ‘A vehicle of symbols and nothing more’. George Romanes, theory of mind, information, and Samuel Butler

    Open Access•Donald R Forsdyke•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2015

Today’s ‘theory of mind’ (ToM) concept is rooted in the distinction of nineteenth-century philosopher William Clifford between ‘objects’ that can be directly perceived and ‘ejects’, such as the mind of another person, which are inferred from one’s subjective knowledge of one’s own mind. George Romanes, a founder with Charles Darwin of the discipline of comparative psychology, considered the minds of animals as ejects, an idea that could be genera…

  • Information Levels and Barriers

    Donald R Forsdyke•CHAPTER•Evolutionary Bioinformatics•2011

Aristotle wrote that the form-giving essence, the eidos, “does not become part of the embryo, just as no part of the carpenter enters the wood he works...but the form is imparted by him to the material” [2, 3]. A carpenter will often hold the information for imparting form to wood in his head. If he wishes to communicate this information to other carpenters separated from himself in time and space, he has to choose symbols and a code. The symbols…

  • George Romanes, William Bateson, and Darwin's ‘weak point’

    Open Access•Donald R Forsdyke•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•2010

Thomas Huxley identified as Darwin's ‘weak point’ the failure of breeders when crossing varieties within a species to simulate the sterility of hybrids derived from crosses between allied species. As a result of the sterility, the parents of a hybrid were, in an evolutionary sense, reproductively isolated from each other, so they would be members of distinct species. In his theory of ‘physiological selection’, Romanes postulated germline ‘collect…
