Clinicians and the governance of hospitals
This paper explores similarities and differences in the value stances of clinicians and hospital managers in Australia, England, New Zealand and China, and provides some new insights into how we theorise about the health profession and its relations with management. Medical Education and Curriculum Reform
The purpose of this paper is to elaborate criteria by which the principles of curriculum reform can be judged. To this end, the paper presents an overview of standard critiques of medical education and examines the ways medical curriculum reforms have responded to these critiques. The Almajiri Heritage and the Threat of Non-State Terrorism in Northern Nigeria--Lessons from Central Asia and Pakistan
The Almajiri heritage is, like the madrassahs in Central Asia, a system of Muslim education that dates back several centuries. This paper considers the tension which develops among participants present at a health planning meeting, and describes the ‘ymbolic violence’ Bourdieu 1991) committed by two speakers on another. The focus will be on the contradiction that arises between bureaucratic discourse which is oriented towards ‘ue process’ and the interpersonalising trend of the talk towards conflict. The Significance Of ‘Sectors’ In Calls For Urban Public Health Intersectoralism
Calls for intersectoral approaches in The New Public Health are characterised by their hortatory character, their inattention to root causes and their apparent faith in approaches that lie in administrative rather than political domains. Staging an Official Inquiry for Policy Change
This paper provides a participant account of what was involved in Australia in using an official inquiry to produce a change in regulatory policy pertaining to therapeutic drug administration. The case study shows how the inquiry process was taken beyond formality and was focused on generating packages of bargains to which contending stakeholders could lend support. Structure and Action as Constructs in the Practice of Public Administration
In this paper we first examine the dominant instrumental paradigm of organization, and the critique to which it has been subjected from both social action theory and a more structural analysis of organizational life. Secondly, we draw on critical theory to construct an alternative paradigm. This addresses some of the problems left by critiques of the dominant paradigm, focuses on the relationship between structure and action, and the way in which…
