Early Maya chert caching documented through archaeological geophysics at Cahal Pech, Belize
A geophysical survey at Cahal Pech, Belize, identified one of the earliest securely dated lithic caches from the Maya lowlands. Linked to Middle Preclassic (800–400 cal BC) monumental architecture and communal ceremonial events, this find demonstrates the effectiveness of gradiometry for detecting ritual deposits
Examining Medieval Long-Wall frontier systems (11th – 12th centuries AD) through archaeological geophysics in the Eastern Mongolian Steppe Region
Geophysical survey of a Medieval wall system in northeastern Mongolia. • Exploring the structure and function of 11th century CE walled enclosures. • Integrating gradiometry and GPR in archaeological exploration. • Exposing the wooden poles construction of a Medieval gate structure. This paper presents the results of exploratory geophysical surveys and ground truthing of a cluster of earthen enclosures associated with a long-wall frontier system …
Identifying Early Neolithic Settlements in the Šumadija Region of Serbia Through Combined Pedestrian Survey and Archaeological Geophysical Prospection
The development of Neolithic lifeways represented fundamental shifts in social organization and human-environment relationships within local ecological settings. An understanding of this process in the Balkans peninsula has remained intriguing and challenging in the broader context of European prehistory. Evidence for Neolithization processes in the Balkans begins around the seventh millennium BC in the south-east at important tell sites such as …
Diversity In Andean Chenopodium Domestication
The domestication of Chenopodium in the Andean altiplano of South America was a complex process that took place during the Formative period (1800 B.C.-A.D. 400). We identified a new archaeological morphological type of Chenopodium sp. at the La Barca site, located in the Department of Oruro, Bolivia. We analyzed testa texture, margin configuration, beak prominence, seed diameter, and testa thickness using scanning electron microscopy. As a member…

Regional Settlement Patterns in the Tiwanaku Valley of Bolivia
Regional settlement patterns from the formative through Post-Classic Tiwanaku periods (1500 B.C.–A.C. 1100) in the Tiwanaku Valley of Bolivia arc explored. Ecological considerations, rank-size interpretations, and some aspects of central place theory are incorporated into this investigation of the evolution of regional social and political organization of the Tiwanaku polity. Taken together; the analyses point away from reconstructions of the Tiw…
Domestic Life and Vertical Integration in the Tiwanaku Heartland
Recent research on the Tiwanaku state has documented the evolution of regional settlement patterns and agricultural systems, but little is known of changes at the subregional level outside the capital. Analysis of a sequence of domestic occupations excavated at Lukurmata, Bolivia, provides information on how individual households within the Tiwanaku core area were consolidated into the Tiwanaku polity. Changes in residential patterns and artifact…
Domestic Artifact Assemblages and Ritual Activities in the Bolivian Formative
Survey and excavation in Oruro, Bolivia, have begun to reveal the nature of residential life during the Formative Period (1800 B.C.–A.C. 300) in central highland Bolivia. This report presents the results of recent investigations at the "Wankarani complex" site of San Andres. Excavation revealed clusters of clay figurines, grinding stones, and chipped stone bifaces in domestic contexts. Patterns of interassemblage variability and differential disc…
Lukurmata
Household archaeology, together with community and regional settlement information, forms the basis for a unique local perspective of Andean prehistory in this study of the evolution of the site of Lukurmata, a pre-Columbian community in highland Bolivia. First established nearly two thousand years ago, Lukurmata grew to be a major ceremonial center in the Tiwanaku state, a polity that dominated the south-central Andes from a.d. 400 to 1200. Afte…
