  • A Theory of Andean Geoglyphs

C Stanish, Henry Tantaleán et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•2026•Referencias: 33

Geoglyphs are found throughout the premodern world. They represent some of the most undertheorized but important archaeological phenomena in our discipline. Decades of systematic work in the Andes has allowed us to model the development of geoglyphs through time. Geoglyphs were preceded by petroglyphs that demarcated travel routes. Isolated sets of figural geoglyphs on hillsides emerged alongside petroglyph clusters before the Early Horizon and f…

  • The Activated Singer

Open Access•Karen Wise, Karen J Wise et al.•ARTICLE•Music Perception An Interdisciplina…•2024

Many adults avoid singing participation, even in informal situations. We examined components of singing identity in self-identified non-singers using questionnaires, including a novel Singing Inhibition (SI) scale, among 238 adults volunteering for a training study. Higher levels of Singing Inhibition were predicted by a combination of lower self-reported singing skill, lower Parental/Family Engagement in singing, and stronger belief that singing…

  • Documenting 12,000 Years of Coastal Occupation on the Osmore Littoral, Peru

    D Defrance, Susan D Defrance et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2009•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 30

The history of coastal settlement in Peru beginning ca. 12,000 years ago provides insight into maritime adaptations and regional specialization. We document the Late Paleoindian to Archaic occupational history along the Osmore River coastal plain near Ilo with 95 radiocarbon dates from eight sites. Site distribution suggests that settlement shifted linearly along the coast, possibly in relation to the productivity of coastal springs. Marine foods…

  • Establishing an empirical profile of self-defined “tone deafness”

    Open Access•Karen Wise, Karen J Wise et al.•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•2008

Research has suggested that around 17% of Western adults self-define as “tone deaf” (Cuddy, Balkwill, Peretz & Holden, 2005). But questions remain about the exact nature of tone deafness. One candidate for a formal definition is “congenital amusia” (Peretz et al., 2003), characterised by a dense music-specific perceptual deficit. However, most people self-defining as tone deaf are not congenially amusic (Cuddy et al., 2005). According to Sloboda,…

  • The Curatorial Voice

    Open Access•Karen Wise•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2005•Referencias: 1

Two new exhibits on ancient Andean civilizations are open in the United States. Machu Picchu: Unveiling the Mystery of the Incas is a large traveling exhibition and Tiwanaku: Ancestors of the Inca is a smaller temporary exhibition that is not traveling. Both introduce North American audiences to objects and information that have never been exhibited in the United States and each includes some extraordinary artifacts. The two exhibits differ in ma…

  • Differences in 14 C Age Between Stratigraphically Associated Charcoal and Marine Shell from the Archaic Period Site of Kilometer 4, Southern Peru

    Open Access•D J Kennett, B Lynn Ingram et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2002•Citada por: 28•Referencias: 17

Consistently large differences occur in the calibrated 14 C ages of stratigraphically associated shell and charcoal samples from Kilometer 4, an Archaic Period archaeological site located on the extreme south coast of Peru. A series of nine shell and charcoal samples were collected from a Late Archaic Period (~6000–4000 BP) sector of the site. After calibration, the intercepts of the charcoal dates were ~100–750 years older than the paired shell …

  • A Late Archaic Period Burial from the South-Central Andean Coast

    Open Access•Karen Wise, Niki R Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•1994•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 13

Recent excavations at the Late Archaic Period (ca. 3000-1000 B.C.) site of Kilometer 4 on the far south coast of Peru exposed a burial containing the remains of a 45-year-old male. The individual was buried with an unusual assemblage of artifacts that includes bone and shell implements and elaborate and distinctive cotton textiles, as well as a complex of paraphernalia of which some items were apparently associated with the use of hallucinogenic …
