Locus of Territorial Attachments
In this paper, we elaborate on Hooghe and Marks's (2001) conceptualization of territorial attachments. We assume that multi-identities related to the territory should reveal the locus on the continuum from local to national. On the basis of IntUne data, we build a ten-point scale, assigning high weights to multi-identity involving local and regional attachments and low weights to the attachments on only a national level and to the lack of territo…
Five Terms of the Polish Parliament, 1989–2005
During the initial post-communist decade, the Polish Sejm, with a limited Senate, has been the major centre of constitution preparation, government support, party formation and policy decisions. Each government has been defeated in succeeding elections, parties are unstable and election law is continuously revised. Continued high turnover of members leads to inexperienced committee members and chairpersons. The government and ministries also expe…
Political Elite in Transformation
In this article, the concept of political elite denotes a large stratum of politicians who are systematically involved in making politics on the national level and who "make a living of politics," that is, they are "professional politicians" in the Weberian sense. The distinction between those who exert greater and smaller impact on political decisions of the state (legislative, executive, judicial) are the subject of empirical study and assessme…

Notions of nationalism
In recent years, following the end of the cold war and the relative simplicities of the bipolar confrontation, nationalism has re-emerged as a dominant force and ideology in our world. Everywhere, peoples who had been confined within the borders of countries with which they did not identify, and whose regimes they intensely disliked, have been seeking self-determination and democracy. Notions of Nationalism, as the title implies, is an open-minde…

Unfulfilled Systemic Functions of Social Mobility
Using the theoretical framework developed in the first paper ('Unfulfilled Systemic Functions of Social Mobility: A Theoretical Scheme'), we analyse the Polish case. We argue that the contribution of collective mobility to politico-revolutionary legitimation processes has been minimal and the contribution of individual mobility to the economic development and to economico-reformist legitimation processes has also been negligible. Our research str…
Unfulfilled Systemic Functions of Social Mobility I
Contrary to the views of some Marxists, we are firmly convinced that social mobility is not a 'bourgeois problematic'. We believe that, given certain preconditions, mobility processes may contribute significantly to the effective functioning of a socialist socio-economic system. In this respect they have great potential but the effective utilization of that potential is problematic

The Evaluation of Occupations by Warsaw Inhabitants
Before World War II Poland was a non-industrial country with widespread urban and rural unemployment, a high rate of illiteracy, and strong and rigid stratification on the basis of material situation and style of life. Since 1939 the Polish people have gone through five years of occupation and war, rapid urbanization and industrialization, and nationalization of production; a new socialist ideology prevails. To assess the impact of these structur…
