  • Structural fire as a social problem

    Open Access•Sarah Grant, Marie-Pier Joly•ARTICLE•Social Problems•2025•Referencias: 44

The victims of severe New York City blazes are most often immigrants, and the worst fires occur in neighborhoods with higher proportions of Black and Latinx residents. While race, socioeconomic status, and foreign-born characteristics have been established as fire risk factors, contemporary disparities in firehouse distribution at the neighborhood level remain an underexplored avenue of research. Open Access•Julia Rüdel, Marie-Pier Joly•ARTICLE•Comparative Migration Studies•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 24

Studies have focused on migrants’ levels of distress or well-being, and recent research looks at older migrants’ experience with loneliness. What has yet to be researched is how different migrant groups experience loneliness, and how these feelings are affected by the contexts of leaving one country and reception in another. Drawing on the …

The context of exit is defined at the country level, as opposed to self-reported individual experiences of trauma. While most studies start from a question about direct ex…

    Open Access•Marie-Pier Joly, J G Reitz•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•2018•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 34

This study examines theories of Muslim minority integration as these apply to republican France and multicultural Canada, using data on psychological distress as a key measure. Based on the 2001–2002 Canadian Community Health Survey and the 2008 French Enquête sur la Santé et la Protection Sociale, we find Muslim minorities experience higher levels of psychological distress than non-Muslims, not only in France but also in Canada. The Muslim diffe…

  • The Impact of Armed Conflict in the Country of Origin on Mental Health after Migration to Canada

Open Access•Marie-Pier Joly, Blair Wheaton•ARTICLE•Society and Mental Health•2015

This article examines mental health differences among migrants who emigrated from both armed conflict countries and non–conflict countries versus native-born Canadians. We propose that the impact of armed conflict on mental health depends on defining characteristics of the conflict. Our analysis of migrants to Toronto, Canada, suggests that exposure to major intrastate conflicts have long-term impacts on depression among women and anxiety levels …
