  • Towards a dynamic approach to acculturation

Open Access•Karen Van Der Zee, Jan Pieter Van Oudenhoven•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 21

One of the most influential models of acculturation is Berry's (1980) two-dimensional model. In this paper we argue that Berry's model does insufficient justice to current demographic and technical developments. Modern societies and particularly big cities are characterized by large immigrant populations as well as super-diversity. Moreover, technical developments allow immigrants to maintain almost unlimited contacts with their original culture.…

  • Multicultural Personality Questionnaire

Karen Van Der Zee, Jan Pieter Van Oudenhoven et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality Assessment•2013

This study reports on the development of the Multicultural Personality Questionnaire-Short Form among 511 participants. Using a split-sample scale validation design, Study 1 (N = 260) employed a principal component analysis and rigorous item selection criteria to extract a 40-item short form (MPQ-SF) from the original 91-item Multicultural Personality Questionnaire (MPQ; van der Zee & van Oudenhoven, 2000, 2001). In Study 2 (N = 251), the MPQ-SF …

  • Culture Shock or Challenge? The Role of Personality as a Determinant of Intercultural Competence

Open Access•Karen Van Der Zee, Jan Pieter Van Oudenhoven•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2013•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 50

This paper provides a theoretical basis for the empirical link between traits and intercultural success indicators relying on the A (Affect) B (Behavior) C (Cognition)-model of culture shock. With respect to affect, we argue that intercultural traits can be differentiated according to whether they predispose individuals to be (in-)sensitive to either threat or challenge. Whereas stress-related traits (emotional stability, flexibility) are linked …

  • Prosocial behavior in diverse workgroups

    Open Access•Menno Vos, Karen Van Der Zee•ARTICLE•Group Processes & Intergroup…•2011•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 17

Members from diverse workgroups face the challenge to work effectively together. Benefits associated with diversity may be overshadowed by lack of cohesion and subgroup forming, which can withdraw team members from working together cooperatively or helping each other out when necessary. In three studies, we showed that an individual’s focus on relationships (relational identity orientation; Brewer & Gardner, 1996), promotes prosocial behavior tow…

  • Social identity patterns and trust in demographically diverse work teams

Open Access•Karen Van Der Zee, Menno Vos et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2009•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 63

The article presents a model that links trust in a demographically diverse work context to three different social-identity patterns. Trust is considered to be beneficial for interpersonal relationships and work outcomes in diverse teams as well as for a healthy work relationship between minority members and their company. First, imposing a common ingroup identity based on similarities has been put forward as a useful method of creating depersonal…

  • Personality and Dutch Emigrants' Reactions to Acculturation Strategies

Open Access•Winny Bakker, Karen Van Der Zee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Social…•2006•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 9

This experimental questionnaire study examined individual differences in affective and normative reactions to acculturation strategies. A sample of 265 Dutch emigrants with a dual cultural background read scenarios describing the experiences of an emigrant. Eight (4 × 2) different scenario versions were developed, each referring to 1 of 4 acculturation strategies ( Berry, 1997 ) and representing either the Frisian or the Dutch native culture. Par…

  • Personality, Threat, and Cognitive and Emotional Reactions to Stressful Intercultural Situations

Open Access•Karen Van Der Zee, Jan Pieter Van Oudenhoven et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2004

The present study examined individual differences in appraisal of and affective reactions to intercultural situations. A sample of 160 students filled out the Multicultural Personality Questionnaire (MPQ) and participated in an experiment in which they received a description of an intercultural situation that was either high or low in potential stressfulness. Individuals with high scores on the intercultural dimensions appraised the potentially s…

  • The Influence of Social Identity and Personality on Outcomes of Cultural Diversity in Teams

The present study examined the influence of social identity and personality on work outcomes among business students who worked together in culturally diverse teams. As predicted, a negative effect of identification with one's cultural background and a positive effect of identification with the team on well-being were found under conditions of high diversity. For commitment, the same pattern of findings was obtained, but now the impact of identif…

  • Neuroticism and Social Comparison Orientation as Moderators of Affective Responses to Social Comparison at Work

Open Access•Bram P Buunk, Karen Van Der Zee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2001

In a study among 72 nurses, the affective consequences of social comparison were examined and related to neuroticism (N) and to social comparison orientation (SCO). Participants were confronted with a bogus interview with an upward versus a downward comparison target. Positive affect and identification were higher, and negative affect was lower, in the upward than in the downward comparison condition. Independent of their SCO, the higher individu…

  • Neuroticism and Reactions to Social Comparison Information Among Cancer Patients

Open Access•Karen Van Der Zee, Bram Buunk et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•1998

In an experimental study neuroticism was examined as a moderator of breast cancer patients’ affective reactions to social comparison information about a fellow patient. Fifty‐seven women with breast cancer completed Eysenck’s Personality Questionnaire and received social comparison information about a fellow patient who was either doing better (upward condition) or worse (downward condition) than themselves. As expected, patients showed more posi…

  • Social comparison preferences among cancer patients as related to neuroticism and social comparison orientation

Karen Van Der Zee, Frans Oldersma et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1998•Citada por: 12

Effects of neuroticism and social comparison orientation on social comparison among cancer patients were examined. A computer program that enabled patients to access information about fellow patients' disease-related experiences was developed. Patients selected more interviews concerning more as compared to less fortunate others, spent more time reading, and showed more favorable reactions to such information. Individuals with a strong comparison…
