All the World’s a Stage”
Several earthworks were constructed over the course of a millennium as outstanding joint achievements on a large Neolithic settlement site in north-western Gäuboden. An enclosure of the Linienbandkeramik was replaced by a Middle Neolithic complex, which was followed by multi-phase ditch rings of the Münchshöfen culture. The ditch systems on both sides of the middle course of the Pfatter River were rather of a short-lived and transient character. …
Preliminary considerations on the Scythian stone statue of 4 th Century BC from the tumular necropolis from Peceneaga-Cerna, Tulcea County
During a survey in Peceneaga, Tulcea county in Dobruja, several settlements and mounds (necropolises) from the 4 th century were discovered. Topographic and geophysical surveys of the “Breazu tumulus” and its surroundings have revealed a partially destroyed tumular necropolis, where the barrow with the statue had a stone ring. The presence of a burial chamber below the embankment could not be proven; another burial structure was probably present.…
The Hascherkeller rectangular farmstead and its implications for Hallstatt social complexity
Enclosed rectangular farmsteads from the Hallstatt period in Central Europe are often cast as the seats of high-status farmers, whose land and social standing could be inherited and consolidated. Excavations at Landshut-Hascherkeller in Bavaria reveal the developmental trajectory of one such site through the stratigraphic disentanglement of its numerous ditches. Here, the authors argue that the coalescence of two rectangular farmsteads into a lar…
Hallstatt Period Rectangular Farmsteads in the Old Bavarian Loess Landscape
In the occasionally lively debate about the social structure of the Central European Early Iron Age, the Herrenhof as the presumed seat of a high-status farmer now also plays a role. A rectangular farmstead of this type is the famous Hascherkeller site on the northern outskirts of Landshut. The first magnetic prospection ever conducted at such an archaeological structure was carried out here in 1978. The site became widely known for its distincti…
The Early Neolithic Cultural Transformation in the Targowisko Settlement Region, SE Poland
The aim of the article is to characterize the early Neolithic settlement region of Targowisko in SE Poland. It is located on the northern edge of the Western Carpathians, 30 km east of Krakow. It functioned during the development of the entire Linear Pottery culture (LBK) and the subsequent Malice culture (MC), in the period from 5300 to 4500 BC. The focus was on the cultural transformation at the turn of the 6 th to the 5 th millennium BC. Cases…

Culture transformation in Targowisko microregion. Trends of changes inside Danubian farmers
The aim of this article is to deepen the discussion on the nature and mechanisms of culture change based on the analysis of newly acquired materials from the Targowisko settlement region. Three groups of materials were acquired (from narrow time horizons) related to the single-phase relics of Linienbandkeramik (Brzezie, site 40 and Targowisko, site 16) and Malice culture houses (Targowisko, site 14-15). The absolute chronology of the beginning of…
Kozachyi Yar 1
In Kozavchyn on the Southern Bug, an Early Copper Age settlement surrounded by trenches was explored by means of field surveys and magnetic prospection. In addition to the enclosing trenches, the magnetogram revealed a palisade trench and remains of pits and burnt houses, which covered a contiguous area with archaeological findings of almost 4 ha situated on a spur with the field name “Kozachyi Yar”. The settlement belongs to the Trypillia BI loc…
The earthworks at Altheim
In 2012, fi eldwork recommenced at the Altheim earthwork, discovered more than a century ago. The investigation in its immediate environs revealed a second ditched enclosure from the Altheim period, south-east of the previously known structure. The two enclosures are spatially related to one another. It was found that several decimetres of soil have been eroded during the last hundred years in the area of the north earthwork; the very substance o…
Helmstedt. Ein Herrschaftssitz in der Kontaktzone zwischen Lausitzer Ku…

Archaeology and landscape features in Magnetometer Data
Geophysics, especially magnetometry, right now has become famous for detecting archeological features and mapping entire archaeological sites (Gaffney 2008). It allows to map pits, fortifications, buildings, post holes, graves etc. without excavation i. e. destruction. Nevertheless, since magnetometry plots any type of magnetic anomalies including modern disturbances and natural e. g. geological structures, it also maps the natural environment of…
Zilum
In the last few years, archaeological investigations carried out at the mid-first millennium BC settlement site of Zilum, Nigeria, have integrated magnetic survey, a geophysical technique, as an additional source of information. Amongst other results, the magnetic survey revealed the presence of an archaeological feature that encloses the entire settlement area. Excavations show that this feature consists of a ditch. Dimensions and shape suggest …
