  • Metallurgical technology and resources mobility in the El Argar culture

    Open Access•N Escanilla, M Murillo-Barroso et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2025•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 36

Metallurgy has been defined as a pivotal activity in understanding of the development of El Argar society. Nonetheless, comprehensive studies of extractive metallurgical processes based on archaeometallurgical analyses remain lacking. This article examines the production remains found at the El Argar site of Laderas del Castillo, documented from 2150 to 1950 cal BC, including samples of slag, crucibles, copper prills and artefacts. Laderas del Ca…

  • Surveying El Argar, Almeria, Spain

    Open Access•Borja Legarra Herrero, M Murillo-Barroso et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•Referencias: 6

An intensive archaeological surface survey of the El Argar site and its hinterland has provided new information for the discussion of early sociopolitical complexity in the western Mediterranean. This article presents the preliminary interpretation of a long-term settlement pattern, particularly in the Bronze Age

  • Archaeometallurgical characterization of Late Antique personal adornments. The necropolis of Cortijo del Chopo (Granada, Spain)

Open Access•Elena Vallejo‐Casas, Gisela Ripoll et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024

Objects of personal adornment from Late Antiquity have been extensively studied in the Iberian Peninsula since the 19th century, when the first funerary contexts from that period began to come to light. However, only partial information was available with regard to their production process and chemical composition. This came from the archaeometallurgical studies carried out on funerary assemblages from central and northern Iberia. In order to obt…

  • Siret revisited

    Open Access•M Murillo-Barroso, I Montero-Ruiz et al.•ARTICLE•SPAL Revista de Prehistoria y…•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

This paper presents the analytical study of the metal objects from the Siret Collection held by the British Museum. X-ray Fluorescence has been conducted to determine their elemental composition and by lead isotope analysis (by MC-ICP-MS) to determine their origin. We combine this new data with extant analyses to discuss and reinterpret the role of bronze alloys in Argaric society and the diversity of exploited mining resources

  • Exploitation of Mining Resources in El Argar Culture

    Open Access•M Murillo-Barroso, Gonzalo Aranda Jiménez et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2024•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 2

This research addresses the territorial organisation of metallurgical production during the El Argar Bronze Age (2200–1550 cal bc ) in the inner areas of El Argar territory through lead‐isotope and trace element analyses of geological copper ores, archaeometallurgical remains and copper‐based artefacts. Results from 31 mineral and 35 archaeological samples suggest that the exploitation of copper resources in the studied region was significant and…

  • Al Calor Del Fuego

Beatriz Comendador Rey, A Lackinger et al.•ARTICLE•Boletín de Arqueología Experimental•2021

In this paper, we resume several actions in the field of prehistoric Archeometallurgy and Experimental Archaeology. These actions has been to promote both academic and didactic research, either in different educational contexts. Most actions, activities focused in the familiarization with the main aspects of the theoretical copper-based and iron production operative chains. These activities provided participants with basic theoretical and empiric…

  • Study of a Late Bronze Age Casting Mould and Its Black Residue by 3D Imaging, pXRF, SEM-EDS, Micro-FTIR and Micro-Raman

    Open Access•Elin Figueiredo, C Bottaini et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2021•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6

In the present work, a fragment of a stone mould recently found in Galicia (NW Spain) was studied by multiple analytical techniques approach involving 3D optical imaging reconstruction to obtain data about the shape of the mould, typology of artefact produced, and distribution of a black residue at the surface of the mould and pXRF, SEM-EDS, micro-FTIR, and micro-Raman to investigate the nature of the black residue. The study shows that the mould…
