AI for democratic participation? Citizens’ perceptions of problems in online participation processes and AI-based solutions
This study investigates citizens’ perceptions of problems in online citizen participation (OCP) and their views on the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to address them. Based on a nationwide survey in Germany (n = 484), we identified six categories of perceived problems, including lack of binding consequences, issues related to the usability and functionality of OCP platforms, and deficits in tolerance and civility. Participants consider…
A Possible Depiction of a Woolly Rhino from the Late Magdalenian Hunting Camp of Bad Kösen-Lengefeld in Central Germany
In Central Germany, rhino images were engraved on stone objects during the Magdalenian period, before the global extinction of the woolly rhino around 14,000 cal BP. Our recent excavations, at the Magdalenian open-air settlement site of Bad Kösen-Lengefeld, added to this record, yielding a limestone slab with a presumptive rhino portrait from an exactly stratified, thoroughly documented and well-dated cultural context. Here we present the unique …
A GIS-Based Digital Documentation Protocol for High-Resolution Documentation of Paleolithic Sites
Digitization of excavation recording can be a means to improve efficiency and accuracy of archaeological documentation on site. In the publications of the last decades, numerous different methodologies and various technical solutions have been presented. In this regard, this paper presents an approach to digital documentation developed for the excavation of the Upper Paleolithic site of Bad Kösen-Lengefeld based on the documentation requirements …
Transport Patterns as Heuristic Testing Variables for the Social Coherence of Taxonomic Units at Different Spatial Scales
Taxonomic units in archaeology strongly convey the assumption of a social connection between the people having left the sites attributed to these units. The (implicit) assumption is that people whose sites are attributed to the same unit had closer social relations among one another than they had to people whose sites are attributed to other taxonomic units, and that such social proximity is reflected in similarities in their material culture. It…
Intra-Site Structure of the Early Ahmarian Site of Al-Ansab 1, AH 1 (Jordan)
The Early Ahmarian represents an Early Upper Palaeolithic cultural unit, which spans throughout the Levant to the Sinai Peninsula. At least 40 sites belong to this unit. Both open-air and cave sites provide different amounts of archaeological material at various spatial resolutions. The team of the Collaborative Research Centre 806 “Our Way to Europe” excavated the site of Al-Ansab 1, Wadi Sabra, since 2009. The site provides one of the largest l…
Gazelle Hunting Strategies in the Early Ahmarian
Visual conditions around Palaeolithic sites determine how the landscape was perceived by prehistoric hunter-gatherers. By placing the site in different landscapes, different visual foci were encoded in the locational characteristics of the different places. For the Early Ahmarian sites in the Levant, it can be shown that visual characteristics differ significantly with the combination of large ungulate prey exploited at the respective location. A…
Cultural taxonomies in the Paleolithic-Old questions, novel perspectives
The bond mechanism between steel and concrete can be compromised during a fire and is one of the least investigated phenomena in concrete research. In this work we present a thorough review of the experimental data available on this topic. The results from the tests reported by a number of researchers have been systematically collected in a database. This work also reports the results obtained in the bond strength tests carried out on four batche…
A Technological and Typological Analysis of Lithic Material from Skovmosen I, Denmark
During road construction work, material attributed to the Final Palaeolithic was discovered at Skovmosen I, near Kongens Lyngby on Zealand, eastern Denmark. Although it is regularly mentioned in reviews of the southern Scandinavian Final Palaeolithic, the Skovmosen I assemblage has hitherto remained poorly described. We here review the site’s discovery history and its context. Aided by a three-dimensional digital recording protocol, this article …
Eight New Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene AMS Dates from the Southeastern Baltic
Only a limited number of radiometric dates for the Final Palaeolithic and the first half of the Mesolithic are available from the southeastern Baltic. This paper presents eight new Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrometry ( 14 C AMS) ages of osseous artifacts housed at the Kaliningrad Regional Museum of History and Art. These artifacts include one piece of worked reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus ) antler, three axes o…
All these Fantastic Cultures? Research History and Regionalization in the Late Palaeolithic Tanged Point Cultures of Eastern Europe
The Late Glacial, that is the period from the first pronounced warming after the Last Glacial Maximum to the beginning of the Holocene (c. 16,000–11,700 cal bp ), is traditionally viewed as a time when northern Europe was being recolonized and Late Palaeolithic cultures diversified. These cultures are characterized by particular artefact types, or the co-occurrence or specific relative frequencies of these. In north-eastern Europe, numerous cultu…
A Critical Reassessment of Cultural Taxonomies in the Central European Late Palaeolithic
In the analysis of archaeological relationships and processes, a uniform classification of the dataset is a fundamental requirement. To achieve this, a standardised taxonomic system, as well as consistent and valid criteria for the grouping of sites and assemblages, must be used. The Central European Late Palaeolithic (ca. 12,000–9700 cal BC) has a long research history and many regionally and temporally specific units—groups and cultures—are rec…

Rockshelters and the impact of the Laacher See eruption on Late Pleistocene foragers
Predictive modelling has identified rockshelter sites to the north-east of the Laacher See volcano in western Germany. These will be excavated to investigate the impacts of volcanic eruption on Late Pleistocene foragers
