The Gender Gap in Heart Disease
Why are men more susceptible to heart disease than women? Traditional risk factors cannot explain the gender gap in coronary heart disease (CHD) or the rapid increase in CHD mortality among middle-aged men in many of the newly independent states of Eastern Europe. Sexual functioning and practices in a multi‐ethnic study of midlife women
This study examined the sexual practices and function of midlife women by ethnicity (African American, Caucasian, Chinese, Hispanic, Japanese) and menopausal status. Sexual behavior was compared in 3,262 women in the baseline cohort of SWAN. Participants were 42 to 52 years old, premenopausal or early perimenopausal, and not hysterectomized or using hormones. Analysis used multivariate proportional odds regression. In our sample, 79% had engaged …

This paper provides national estimates from the December 1984 Current Population Survey of the number of school-age children who in the past 4 weeks have been in self-care or in the care of a sibling or other person under the age of 14 during non-school hours either before school after school or at night. This article reviews recent studies conducted under the auspices of the Center for Population Research NICHD which attempt to assess the impact of teenage parenthood on children born before their mothers 20th birthdays. The relationship between young maternal age and increased risk of low birthweight babies and perinatal infant mortality noted in earlier studies has been found to be almost entirely due to the quality of prenatal care received by …
