The Dimensions of Abundance in AI-Generated Feedback
Feedback is an integral part of the learning process. However, delivering feedback effectively remains challenging, particularly within massified higher education systems that are characterised by large cohorts and increasingly diverse student populations. The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) enables new ways of embedding feedback into educational offerings, some of which may be highly beneficial. In this paper, we introduc…
In Curhat We Unite (and Divide)
This article explores the phenomenon of curhat , a form of emotional communication and expression in Indonesia, and how it has evolved into a critical method of political communication, profoundly shaping social media and political discourse in the country. By examining how curhat transitions from private expressions to public engagements within "scalable affective sociality," the study reveals the fluidity of this practice in shaping personal co…
Faith, Followers, and Factions
This introductory article lays the groundwork for the special issue on "Social Media and Society in Indonesia." It examines the co-constitutive relationship between social media and Indonesian society, focusing on their mutual shaping within enduring socio-cultural dynamics. The article calls for a nuanced understanding of how technologies are localized and how diverse "social media publics" emerge in the Indonesian context. It begins by tracing …

The politics and perils of dis/connection in the Global South
Using empirical vignettes of repression against minority groups in the Global South, my essay attempts to contribute to the existing discourse in disconnection studies by contextualising and reconceptualising the notion of disconnection in the contemporary milieu. I introduce the term ‘dis/connection’ into the existing repertoire to illustrate how the interplay between connection and disconnection serves as a tactic and a technique of both repres…
Cyber‐Urban Space
Rejecting spatial dualism that separates the electronic and virtual realm of cyberspace from geographical space, the term cyber‐urban spaces recognizes the integration of the digital and material spaces and acknowledges our hybrid existence in this integrated realm. Cyber‐urban space reflects “where” contemporary urban people live much of the time, juggling multiple identities that transcend online and offline spheres.

Too Crowded for Crowdsourced Journalism
Background This article explores the complexity of citizen participation in social media and crowdsourced journalism by utilizing the case of r/SyrianCivilWar, the sub-community of Reddit where users discuss the Syrian crisis.Analysis In examining the limitations and affordances of the platform, the article identifies features that characterize the r/SyrianCivilWar community, namely: algorithmic driven public discourse, deliberative communication…
Challenging Technological Utopianism
Freedom to hate
Empirically grounded in the 2017 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election (Pilkada DKI) case, this article discusses the relationship of social media and electoral politics in Indonesia. There is no doubt that sectarianism and racism played significant roles in the election and social media, which were heavily utilized during the campaign, contributed to the increasing polarization among Indonesians. However, it is misleading to frame the contestation amon…

Informational Terrains of Identity and Political Power

Recent social movements have been figuratively and digitally ignited in digital media and yet these movements took form, materialised and claimed power in urban public spaces. Digital media and physical urban spaces have become interdependent dimensions of social movements. Together, they can provide 'spaces' for people to interact for the establishment of human agency and the expansion of social networks of the movements. By reading social movem…
Framing Bouazizi
By delving into the detailed account of the Tunisian uprising, this article offers an explanation that sets the 2010 uprising apart from its precursors. The 2010 uprising was successful because activists successfully managed to bridge geographical and class divides as well as to converge offline and online activisms. Such connection and convergence were made possible, first, through the availability of dramatic visual evidence that turned a local…
Many Clicks but Little Sticks
Drawing on empirical cases from Indonesia, this article offers a critical approach to the promise of social media activism by analysing the complexity and dynamics of the relationship between social media and its users. Rather than viewing social media activism as the harbinger of social change or dismissing it as mere "slacktivism," the article provides a more nuanced argument by identifying the conditions under which participation in social med…
The Internet and Everyday Life in Indonesia
In July 2012, the Indonesian Minister of Communication and Information, Tifatul Sembiring, declared that the government had shut down one million websites in view of the Islamic holy month of Ramadhan. This was in addition to another one million sites the ministry claimed to have blocked back in February 2012. Minister Sembiring, a politician from the Islamic-based Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (Prosperous Justice Party, PKS), said that his staff wou…

Psychosocial Adjustment and Substance Use of Cambodian and Vietnamese Immigrant Youth
Southeast Asians living in the United States are a unique Asian immigrant population. They are considered one of the "newer" Asian immigrant groups, tend to be less affluent compared with their East and South Asian counterparts, and are steadily growing in number. Unfortunately, few studies have been conducted specifically about Southeast Asian immigrants. The lack of studies, coupled with the community's growing mental health issues, suggests th…
Advanced Mathematical Science of Ethnic Violence
Advancing peace and conflict studies into a quantitative science requires advanced mathematical methods and concepts. Lim, Metzler and Bar-Yam (2007, “LMB”) provide a wavelet based method for predicting the location of violence in a country based upon the hypothesis that well mixed or well separated groups do not engage in violence, but intermediate sized groups without clear boundaries between them do. Wiedmann and Toft (2010, “WT”) consider the…
Contesting alun-alun
The city is a site where the meaning of buildings, monuments, open spaces and behaviour interweave, and where ideologies and power relations between three agents (the state, civil society and the market) are inscribed in the urban iconography and everyday life, forming interlacing triangles of relationships. This article studies the networks of actors involved in the transformation of the Masjid Raya (Grand Mosque) and alun-alun (the traditional …
Cyber-civic space in Indonesia
The Indonesian experience shows that the internet can be a double-edged sword in facilitating democratisation. Responding to the debate about whether the internet leads to democratisation, is an Orwellian menace to democracy, or is a facilitator of global capitalist hegemony, this paper shows that these questions cannot be resolved in the virtual world of the internet itself. Rather, they are played out locally through struggles revolving around …
