    Matthew Arnold was born in Laleham-on-Thames, 24 December 1822. He was the son of the Reverend Thomas Arnold (headmaster of Rugby School from 1828 until his death in 1842) and Mary Arnold (née Penrose); he was one of nine children who lived to maturity. He attended Winchester School, 1836–7; Rugby School, 1837–40; and Balliol College, Oxford, 1841–4.
