The Program Environment Scale
The Program Environment Scale (PES) was developed for use with clients of community‐based programs for the severely mentally ill. It is intended to fill the gap in available tools for assessing clients' perceptions of program functioning as it affects their “quality of life” in a program. Formal pretests were conducted with 121 clients at 12 randomly selected programs near Washington, DC. The final field test used a revised form (29 domains; 129 …
Methodological issues in assertive community treatment studies
Recent evaluations of ACT programs have produced equivocal findings, often leading to the invocation of methodological problems as responsible for the lack of positive results. This paper discusses issues of theory and methodology as they pertain to improving research of ACT, with particular attention paid to issues of sampling, process evaluation, measurement, and data analysis
Prevention of depression with primary care patients
The prevention of major depression is an important research goal which deserves increased attention. Depressive symptoms and disorders are particularly common in primary care patients and have a negative impact on functioning and well‐being comparable with other major chronic medical conditions. The San Francisco Depression Prevention Research project conducted a randomized, controlled, prevention trial to demonstrate the feasibility of implement…
Dangerous behavior and changes in treatment course
Measuring Physician Behavior
Reliable and valid information on physician behavior is required for measuring the adequacy of physician performance. We studied 4 methods of obtaining information on physician behavior in the ambulatory care of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Physician interview, patient interview, chart audit, and videotaped observation were used to record the performance of 63 physicians in office visits with 214 adult patients. High interrater agreemen…
Measuring Adequacy of Physician Performance
Issues that arise in the development of methods for measuring adequacy of physician performance (MAPP) are discussed. The comparative content validity, scorability, cost, and acceptability of four MAPP strategies are assessed using a sample of clinic-based physicians treating 30 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Criteria for adequate care are contained in a “criteria map.” No one of the four methods (physician interview,…
Personality Inventory Correlates of Outcome in a Follow-up Study of Psychiatric Hospitalization
The study involved a comparison of two diagnostic groups, schizophrenic and nonschizophrenic, randomly assigned to short-term hospitalization (defined as 3 to 4 wk.) versus long-term hospitalization (defined as 3 to 4 mo.). Outcome indices were derived separately from the Health-Sickness Rating Scale and the Psychiatric Evaluation Form, based on ratings at admission, at discharge, and 1 and 2 yr. post-admission. Scores from the intake administrat…
Emergency room? and ?mobile response? models of emergency psychiatric services
Assessment of client/patient satisfaction
Therapist A‐B score and treatment outcome with psychiatric in patients
The study evaluated the relationship between therapist personality and treatment success for 141 schizophrenics and 94 non‐schizophrenics randomly assigned to short or long hospitalization. The 47 therapists were self‐rated on the Whitehorn‐Betz A‐B scale in both the original and the Campbell versions. Outcome was assessed on the Health‐Sickness Rating Scale and the Psychiatric Evaluation Form at discharge and at 1 and 2 year follow‐up. The hypot…
Program evaluation in a rural community mental health center
Voice Quality Changes in Depression
Voice spectra are utilised to track daily shifts in mood in eight acutely disturbed psychiatric patients. Two mood criteria, a self-description and an interviewer rating, were obtained. Multiple regression of voice spectra on to these two criterion measures, using a cross validation design, yielded moderately good prediction for some patients
The influence of sodium pentobarbital on vocal behavior
