The experience of embodiment in emerging adults with type 1 diabetes
Identity and bodily experiences in emerging adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D)
OBJECTIVE: Much remains unknown about how type 1 diabetes (T1D) affects one's identity and bodily experiences in emerging adults. Two relevant frameworks have been introduced in this respect, namely the illness identity (e.g. Oris et al.) and the experience of embodiment framework (e.g. Piran). Guided by these theoretical perspectives, this qualitative study explores identity and bodily experiences of emerging adults living with T1D. METHODS: A t…
Tracking anger at self and others and non-suicidal self-injury cognitions and behavior
Although anger is theorised to play a key role in the manifestation of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), prospective research in real-world settings is limited. Therefore, the present study examines (1) whether individuals with and without a history of NSSI differ in anger levels in their natural setting and (2) whether heightened self- or other-directed anger predicts NSSI cognitions (i.e. thoughts and self-efficacy to resist NSSI) and behaviour …
Eating Disorder Symptomatology and Self-Concept in Late Childhood and Early Adolescence
The present study examined the longitudinal associations and directionality of effects between self-concept and eating disorder symptoms in late childhood and early adolescence. A total of 380 participants (Time 1: 52.2% female; M age = 9.97 years, SD = 0.84, range = 8–12 years) completed self-report questionnaires annually for 3 years. Cross-lagged panel models were used to examine the associations over time between global and domain-specific se…
Temporal dynamics of shame and guilt in adolescent NSSI
In adolescents who engage in NSSI, shame and guilt co-occur with episodes of elevated urges rather than predict them over short periods. Shame appears more involved in the aftermath of NSSI, consistent with a maintenance process, whereas guilt tracked urges to a similar extent but did not change post-NSSI. Clinically, spikes in both shame and guilt may serve as actionable real-time markers, and post-episode support targeting self-criticism and an…

The association between continuing bonds and indicators of mental health and coping in bereaved university students
Many students can be bereaved by the death of a loved one. This study aimed to examine how bereaved students experienced the continuing bond to the deceased (i.e., burdensome, neutral, or supportive) and its association to grief, psychological well-being, social support, coping and stigma. A total of 325 participants filed out a series of standardized instruments (AGI, DASS-21, MSPSS, Brief-COPE, GEQ) and questions designed for the study. Finding…

Linking obsessions to morality
The present study examines the links between different types of morality and obsessions in university students from Leuven, Belgium ( N = 252) and İstanbul, Turkey ( N = 301) using validated scales for morality and obsessions. Belgium and Turkey were chosen as two exemplar cultural contexts expected, and in the current study found, to differ in the relative levels of individualizing and binding morality. We hypothesized that obsessions involving …
DSM-5 non-suicidal self-injury disorder in a community sample
Up to one in five emerging adults engage in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Providing a better understanding of factors that differentiate between who engages in lifetime NSSI and who is more likely to engage in recent and clinically severe NSSI can provide meaningful information for prevention and intervention of NSSI. The present study ( n = 669) considered NSSI lifetime engagement (no prior history of NSSI vs. lifetime NSSI), recency [past NS…
Trajectories of adaptive and disturbed identity dimensions in adolescence
To advance our understanding of adolescents' identity formation and how it may play into their psychological functioning, this study investigated developmental trajectory classes of adaptive and disturbed dimensions of identity formation, and whether adolescents belonging to different trajectory classes develop differently on self-esteem, resilience, symptoms of depression, and borderline personality disorder (BPD) features. Three-wave longitudin…

Association between Grief and Somatic Complaints in Bereaved University and College Students
Many emerging adults experience the death of a loved one while they are enrolled as a student in higher education. Bereavement increases the risk of long-term adverse physical and mental health outcomes. Still, as most studies have focused on psychological aspects of grief, little is known about the impact of grief on somatic complaints in students, leaving them vulnerable to health deteriorations. This study aimed to address this gap, and we hyp…
Personal identity, somatic symptoms, and symptom-related thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
The present paper includes two studies examining how identity functioning is related to (psychological characteristics of) somatic symptoms. Study 1 examined associations between identity and somatic symptoms, whereas Study 2 additionally examined associations between identity and psychological characteristics of somatic symptoms and investigated the mediating role of anxiety and depressive symptoms in the association between identity disturbance…
Factors Associated With Alcohol and Substance Use in Bereaved College and University Students
Experiencing the death of a loved one increases the risk of developing mental health problems. Students are vulnerable to developing mental health problems, to which substance use can contribute. Still, few studies have examined substance use in bereaved students. Using an online survey, we collected data about the impact of the death of a loved one on Belgian students' ( N = 666 ) substance use. Using regression analysis we examined its relation…
Personal growth in bereaved students
Experiencing the death of a loved one can have a substantial negative impact on the grief and mental health of students. However, the bereavement can also lead to personal growth. We investigated the association between personal growth and support, grief, and distress. Bereaved students ( N = 666) at Flemish universities and colleges (Belgium) completed an online survey with sociodemographic questions and four scales assessing personal growth, su…
Subtyping youngsters with obesity
Psychological mechanisms play a crucial role in explaining weight gain. Aim of the present study was to identify subtypes in youngsters with obesity in line with these mechanisms. Defining homogeneous clusters within this heterogeneous group provides relevant information for personalized treatments. Data were collected in N = 572 participants (51% boys, aged 7-19) with extreme obesity (%BMI M = 187.8; SD = 30.9) recruited in an inpatient treatmen…
Identity synthesis and confusion in early to late adolescents
INTRODUCTION: Research on identity development has primarily studied over-time trends in identity status change and exploration and commitment processes among late adolescents and emerging adults. Identity development in early and mid-adolescents has generally been overlooked. Hence, little is known about how a sense of identity synthesis and confusion evolves from early to late adolescence for boys and girls. METHODS: The present cross-sectional…
Transgender and anxiety
Background: Anxiety disorders pose serious public health problems. The data available on anxiety disorders in the transgender population is limited by the small numbers, the lack of a matched controlled population and the selection of a nonhomogenous group of transgender people.Aims: The aims of the study were (1) to determine anxiety symptomatology (based on the HADS) in a nontreated transgender population and to compare it to a general populati…
Recognition and difference
This paper opens the space of post-qualitative research through an exploration of how acts of recognition and non-recognition work on and through the bodies of individual subjects. Using stories generated in a collective biography workshop and drawing on concepts from Foucault and Butler, and also, in contrast, Barad and Deleuze, the paper explores the way these different epistemologies intra-act with ways of seeing/reading/being recognizable sub…

Shildrick’s monster
Working with memories generated in a collective biography workshop on difference/disability and drawing in particular on Shildrick’s analysis of monstrosity, this article analyses the ambivalent processes through which difference is othered and abjected. The article argues that through the process of abjection we disown for ourselves whatever qualities are being categorised as monstrous, with negative effects not just on the other, but also on th…
Pawns or Pioneers? The Logic of User Participation in Anti‐poverty Policy‐making in Public Policy Units in Belgium
Since anti‐poverty policy‐making in Belgium is embedded in a logic of user participation, social policy has shown interest in employing users with experience of poverty as experts in public policy units in order to implement and monitor anti‐poverty policies. In this article, we discuss this recent development as a relevant case for contemporary public service delivery in the European context. In the light of the ambiguous practices of user parti…

Gray's Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory as a framework for research on personality–psychopathology associations
The Pointer Sisters
In this article, acquired knowledge is considered as a temporary reflection that expresses the enactment of a social life that produces and reproduces social realities. Researchers need to engage with an open-ended process of de- and reconstruction of meanings between many players of the social world. As the poststructuralists Deleuze and Guattari reveal, our knowledge base is inherently trapped in lines of flight, on a voyage for which there pre…
International prevalence of adolescent non-suicidal self-injury and deliberate self-harm
BACKGROUND: The behaviours of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and deliberate self-harm (DSH) are prevalent among adolescents, and an increase of rates in recent years has been postulated. There is a lack of studies to support this postulation, and comparing prevalence across studies and nations is complicated due to substantial differences in the methodology and nomenclature of existing research. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of curre…

Identity and Psychopathology
Research has demonstrated the important impact of identity on psychosocial functioning in both community and clinical populations. The present article aims to identify different mechanisms through which identity may be related to psychopathology. Emphasis is placed on neo-Eriksonian identity models targeting identity mechanisms both at the structural and process levels. With respect to psychopathology, the present article focuses mainly on distur…
Identity Distress Throughout Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood
The process of identity formation can cause a considerable amount of distress leading to pathological forms of identity distress. The present study examined age trends in identity distress and associations with identity exploration and commitment in a sample of 2,286 Flemish adolescents and emerging adults (14–30 years, 55.7% females). Important and theoretically meaningful age trends in identity distress were uncovered. More specifically, identi…

Comorbidity Between Non-suicidal Self-Injury Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder in Adolescents
In 2013, DSM-5 urged for further research on non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and defined NSSI disorder (NSSI-D) for the first time separate from borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, research on the comorbidity between NSSI-D and BPD symptoms is still scarce, especially in adolescent populations. The current study selected 347 adolescents who engaged at least once in NSSI (78.4% girls, M age = 15.05) and investigated prevalence, comorbi…
Fluctuations in Affective States and Self-Efficacy to Resist Non-Suicidal Self-Injury as Real-Time Predictors of Non-Suicidal Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors
This study provides preliminary evidence that affective fluctuations may uniquely predict NSSI thoughts but not NSSI behaviors, and point to the role of personal belief in the ability to resist NSSI in preventing NSSI behavior. These findings illustrate the need to differentiate between the development of NSSI thoughts and the progression from NSSI thoughts to behavior, as these are likely distinct processes, with different predictors
