This article investigates the influence of international migration on the filial norms of elder care in transnational families of Syrian Christian nurses from Kerala, South India. The global war on terror was used by the Bush administration and its allies to defend a US dominated geopolitical configuration. To this end, counter-terrorism measures (CTMs) were introduced which strengthened the alignment of development aid with diplomacy and defence. This paper examines why progress towards Millennium Development Goal 5 on maternal health appears to have stagnated in much of the global south. We contend that besides the widely recognised existence of weak health systems, including weak services, low staffing levels, managerial weaknesses, and lack of infrastructure and information, this stagnation relates to the inability of most countries to meet two essential conditions: to develop access t…

This article argues that current feminist perspectives, and development planners and policymakers, have failed to address the issue of ageism and the marginalisation of older women's interests and contribution to development.
