  • Theory and experiment in Parametric Minimalism

    Open Access•Giuseppe Longobardi•ARTICLE•Revista Linguíʃtica•2017

This paper has a double goal: frst, it lays down and refnes the basic hypotheses on the parametric structure of Romance negative systems that were originally introduced in my presentation at the Venice GLOW Workshop on Dialect Variation in 1987 (especially sections 3-9 and 11-13)3; then it further elaborates on them (sections 10 and 14-15), and revisits the conclusions (sections 16-22) in light of a more recent minimalist approach to the possible…

  • Across language families

Open Access•Giuseppe Longobardi, Silvia Ghirotto et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2015•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 56

Objectives : The notion that patterns of linguistic and biological variation may cast light on each other and on population histories dates back to Darwin's times; yet, turning this intuition into a proper research program has met with serious methodological difficulties, especially affecting language comparisons. This article takes advantage of two new tools of comparative linguistics: a refined list of Indo‐European cognate words, and a novel m…

  • Evidence for syntax as a signal of historical relatedness

  • Toward a Unified Grammar of Reference

    Open Access•Giuseppe Longobardi•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft•2005•Citada por: 21•Referencias: 2

The unification of traditionally distinct and apparently unrelated objects of inquiry under common more abstract principles is one of the most welcome results of empirical science. This article proposes to draw together some insights of Longobardi (1994, 1996, 2001) into a unified theory of object- and kind-reference viewed as a single grammatical phenomenon, though crosslinguistically parametrized. The present account aims to improve both in acc…

  • Methods in parametric linguistics and cognitive history

    Giuseppe Longobardi•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation Yearbook•2003

The present paper addresses some foundational issues on the status of parametric linguistics, understood as a partially independent new branch of formal grammar and of the cognitive sciences more generally. Chomsky’s (1964) original three levels of adequacy are extended to five and it is then suggested that the theory of parameters, being able to deal with cultural variation, is in the best position to achieve adequacy at the fourth proposed leve…

  • How Comparative is Semantics? A Unified ParametricTheory of Bare Nouns and Proper Names

    Open Access•Giuseppe Longobardi•ARTICLE•Natural Language Semantics•2001•Citada por: 36•Referencias: 13

  • Formal Syntax, Diachronic Minimalism, and Etymology

    Giuseppe Longobardi•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2001•Citada por: 18•Referencias: 2

Current theories place very mild constraints on possible diachronic changes, something at odds with the trivial observation that actual, "language change" represents a tiny fraction of the variation made a priori available by Universal Grammar. Much recent work in diachronic syntax has actually been guided by the aim of describing changes (e.g., parameter resetting), rather than by concerns of genuine explanation. Here I suggest a radically diffe…

  • "Postverbal" Subjects and the Mapping Hypothesis

    Giuseppe Longobardi•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2000•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 2

Superficially postverbal subjects of free inversion languages such as, Italian are argued to be able to meet two distinct structural analyses: they may occupy either a VP-internal position, as more traditionally assumed, or a higher (preverbal and, actually, left-peripheral) position, with the remnant of the clause crossing leftward over them by dislocation or focus movement. These are all and only the possibilities expected under recent restrict…
