Understanding long run economic development as an evolutionary process
Evolutionary economics and recounting of business history
The Complex Economic Organization of Capitalist Economies
The ideology of how economic activity is organized in capitalist economies is sharp and simple - markets. However, in reality, economic activities in capitalist economies are organized in a variety of different ways, market organization prominent among them but not totally dominating. The basic argument of this paper is that capitalist economies should be understood as mixed economies.Comments on this paper can be found at: http://ssrn.com/abstra…
Economic development as an evolutionary process
In this essay I argue that modern evolutionary economic theory provides a much more adequate framework for understanding the economic development process than the neoclassical theory that for many years has dominated mainline economic thinking. I begin my argument by laying out the basic differences between the two theoretical points of view. I then go on to propose that an adequate theory needs to recognize the rich mix of institutions that are …

The Geography of Innovation
"This handbook looks to provide academies and students with a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the phenomenon of innovation. Innovation spans a number of fields within the social sciences and humanities: Management, Economies, Geography, Sociology, Policy Studies, Psychology, and History. Consequently, the rapidly increasing body of literature on innovation is characterized by a multitude of perspectives based on, or cutting across, ex…

Links and Impacts
In this paper, we use data from the Carnegie Mellon Survey on industrial R&D to evaluate for the U.S. manufacturing sector the influence of “public”(i.e., university and government R&D lab) research on industrial R&D, the role that public research plays in industrial R&D, and the pathways through which that effect is exercised. We find that public research is critical to industrial R&D in a small number of industries and importantly affects indus…
Thoughts Stimulated by Reading Geoffrey Hodgson's Economics and Utopia
This is a wonderfully stimulating and powerful book. I continue to be impressed by how effectively Hodgson can draw material from the history of economic and social thought to raise issues and make points highly relevant to contemporary discussion and analysis. While I was reasonably familiar with much of the intellectual history that Hodgson considers in this book, I still learned a lot from his history of socialist thought, and his discussion o…
Evolutionary Theorizing in Economics
This paper reviews the case for an evolutionary approach to problems of economic analysis, ranging from the details of individual firm behavior in the short run through industrial dynamics to the historical evolution of institutions and technologies. We draw upon a substantial body of recent research contributions. We characterize micro behavior as governed by skills and routines that are shaped by learning and selection. We then consider major a…

Making sense of institutions as a factor shaping economic performance
Protecting Their Intellectual Assets
Based on a survey questionnaire administered to 1478 R&D labs in the U.S. manufacturing sector in 1994, we find that firms typically protect the profits due to invention with a range of mechanisms, including patents, secrecy, lead time advantages and the use of complementary marketing and manufacturing capabilities. Of these mechanisms, however, patents tend to be the least emphasized by firms in the majority of manufacturing industries, and secr…
The Asian Miracle and Modern Growth Theory
This article argues that the rapid growth in a number of Asian economies that occurred between 1960 and 1996 was accompanied by a major change in the structure of their economies including shifts in the size of firms and the sectors of specialization. These changes were a fundamental component of the growth process. While capital accumulation was an important source of growth, its productive assimilation was a critical component of the success of…

The Sources of Economic Growth
Technology and Industrial Development in Japan
Japan was the first major non-Western nation to take on board the Western technological and organizational advances of the century after the first industrial revolution. It subsequently proved fully able to exploit and contribute to the broad, sustained technological advances that began in the 20th century, as science became harnessed to technology. Japan's economic development remains a model for many technologically less advanced countries whic…
On the sources and significance of interindustry differences in technological opportunities
The Co-evolution of Technology, Industrial Structure, and Supporting Institutions
There is a large intellectual discrepancy between most formal growth models described by economists and descriptions of growth in economic history. This paper draws on an evolutionary theory of economic growth that brings together appreciative theorizing regarding growth and formal theorizing. It aims to piece together a relatively coherent appreciative theoretical account of economic development at a sectoral level by laying out a story of the g…

An evolutionary theory of economic change
This book contains the most sustained and serious attack on mainstreem, neoclassical economics in morethan forty years. Nelson and Winter focus their critique on the basic question of how firms and industries cange over time. They marshal significant objections to the fundamental neoclassical assumptions of profit maximization and market equilibrium, which they find ineffective in the analysis of technological innovation and the dynamics of compe…

Roles of Government in a Mixed Economy
This essay argues that market failure analysis provides an unsubstantial basis for assessing the kinds of things governments should be doing if they could do them well, and modern public choice theory an inadequate guide to obstacles to effective governmental action. The argument is supported by analysis of political rhetoric and actual policy in two arenas: support of R&D, and help for poor children
What Is Private and What Is Public About Technology
Technology has a proprietary aspect and a public good aspect. The proprietary aspect makes it profitable for firms to invest in its advance. The public aspect enables the community as a whole to benefit from technological advance. In order for technical advance to proceed rapidly and for the gams to be widely shared, there must be an appropriate balance between the proprietary and public aspects. Recent policy discussions have emphasized the prop…

Government Support of Technical Progress
In the past, the U.S. government has been involved in various programs to support technical progress. The record of such programs in seven industries offers important guidelines. The economist's usual presumption that government support for such activities should be concentrated on those cases in which there is palpable market failure proves much too simple. Programs that stand the best chance of success are those in which the government itself i…

Degeneracy in Linear Programming
ONE of the more conceptually mysterious aspects of linear programming is the problem of degeneracy the breaking down of the simplex calculation method under certain circumstances. Although a set of rules for dealing with degeneracy is well known, in the absence of an understanding of the nature of the problem the rules must be followed by rote. This note presents a simple geometrical explanation of the problem, the solution, and explains why cert…

One important one is the growing body of research findings on productivity,' which turned the attention of economists interested in economic growth to…
