Interprovincial migration patterns of Canada's elderly are examined and compared with their nonelderly counterparts, by using data from Revenue Canada's income tax file for a fifteen-year period (1966/67 - 1980/81). Kim's recent reformulation in discrete time of Preston and Coale's continuous time generalized age-distribution model for any population is extended to the multiregional case by the introduction of interregional migration and the simultaneous consideration of multiple interacting regional populations. The Urbanization Process
The author comments on an article by Lynden S. Williams in which Williams attempted to develop a paradigm of population redistribution that pertains to the process of urbanization. The Doubly Constrained Model of Spatial Interaction
Concerned with the doubly constrained case of spatial interaction models, this paper introduces a general functional form that subsumes the usual multiplicative (Wilson) and additive (Tobler) variants as extreme variants. Specifically, this formulation depends on a scalar Λ allowed to vary between 0 (multiplicative case) and 1 (additive case). This paper presents an analytical expression of the rural net outmigration rate compatible with a logistic evolution of the part of the population that is urban in a rural-urban population system. The formula obtained represents a function consistent with the mobility revolution hypothesis of Zelinsky (1971): the rural net migration rate first increases, then passes through a maximum, and finally decreases toward zero. \n \nIn addition, such a fo…
On the Relationship between Alonso's Theory of Movement and Wilson's Family of Spatial-Interaction Models
This paper compares the system of equations underlying Alonso's theory of movement with that of Wilson's standard family of spatial-interaction models. It is shown that the Alonso model is equivalent to one of Wilson's four standard models depending on the assumption at the outset about which of the total outflows and/or inflows are known. This paper proposes a complete dynamic model of a system of metropolitan areas interacting through economic and demographic links, namely trade and migration respectively.
