Instruments, mathematics, and natural knowledge
Historians of astronomy seem often to be disappointed by Thomas Harriot. He can plausibly be approached with such promise as the English Galileo, the English Kepler, and perhaps the English Tycho, rolled into one enigmatic package that the vagaries of historical fortune have left unopened until now. To such hopes can be added the prospect that Harriot might prove a better mathematician than any of them. He had the largest astronomical measuring i…

In the Spring of 1944, an informal discussion took place in Cambridge between Mr. R. S. Whipple, Professor Allan Ferguson and Mr. F. H. C. Robert Hooke as mechanic and natural philosopher
One of the most important aspects of the scientific work of Robert Hooke was his contribution to instrumentation (i), and the part this played in his natural philosophy may be crucial to our understanding of this problematic figure. To be sympathetic both to Hooke’s genius and to his role within the scientific community, such a study must be more expansive and less precisely focused than we have so far allowed. Too much concentration on Hooke’s c…

Wren’s last building
It is well known that the early Fellows of the Royal Society were not altogether happy with their accommodation at Gresham College. Occasionally they discussed plans for a building of their own, a ‘college’ designed for their own particular needs. Certainly with Evelyn, Hooke and Wren as enthusiastic members, there was no shortage, either of architectural skill, or of familiarity with materials, estimates and workmen’s accounts. Did the discussio…
