A case of congenital multiple epiphyseal dysplasia from the Late Migration Period graveyard in Drnholec (Czech Republic)
The Late Migration Period Cemetery at Drnholec (Břeclav District, Czech Republic) / Pohřebiště z konce doby stěhování národů z Drnholce (okres Břeclav, ČR)
The authors present part of a burial ground of the Late Migration Period in Drnholec - Pod sýpkou (Břeclav district, Czech Republic), where seven graves were discovered in 2016 and 2017. The grave goods were identified, by typological analysis, as Langobardian/Lombardian. The authors argue that even a small part of a cemetery with a limited number of graves can bring important new data and open strategic questions, challenging traditional interpr…
Unusual find of osteolytic lesion on skeleton from the Middle Bronze Age—Possible case of peritoneal abscess
During rescue archeological excavation in 2018, the skeletal remains of a young male with an unusually large and rare lytic focus in the right iliac fossa, dating to the Middle Bronze Age, were found at the Mikulov site (Czech Republic). The presented communication considers various diseases that could be the cause of this pathological condition (tuberculosis, syphilis, mycosis, parasitic diseases, tumors, peritoneal abscess). The examination met…
Tarsal Coalition in Skeletal Remains of Past Czech Populations
The possible manifestation of scurvy on skeletal remains dated to 3800–3700 BC
The presented report describes the skeletal remains of a young man with multiple pathological changes, dated to between 3800-3700 BC. The studied skeletal remains were subjected to classical anthropological analysis. The palaeopathological study was based on detailed macroscopic examination supplemented by histological and radiological examinations. In addition to the disorder of flat cranial bones, dental developmental defects, traces after peri…

A very rare case of possible actinomycosis of the mandible from the Middle Ages
Childcare and Development of Paediatrics in Moravia (Czech Republic) in the Context of Palaeopathological Research Focusing on Congenital Malformations, Metabolic and Haematologic Diseases
Studie sleduje zdravotní stav a př…
A brief history of syphilis in the Czech Lands
Bomb Peak
When human remains are found, apart from helping explain the cause of death and determining the extent of any injuries, forensic pathologists are usually requested to determine the identity of the deceased and how much time has elapsed since his death. In the Czech Republic, the criminal liability for murder is set to a statute of limitations of 20 years. In our pilot study, tissue samples of human remains from two decedents were radiocarbon ( 14…
Interpretation of the Facial Skeleton – Post-Traumatic Asymmetry in Palaeopathology
The presented study is focused on the observation and interpretation of post-traumatic changes in the facial skeleton. In injuries of the facial bones, it is particularly significant during which growth period the fracture occurred. Selected cases came from three differently dated periods to demonstrate some types of asymmetry we encountered in bone remains from archaeological researches – 1) approximately 12th–13th centuries BC – Saqqara Egypt, …
Paleopathological, Trichological and Paleoparasitological Analysis of Human Skeletal Remains from the Migration Period Cemetery Prague-Zličín
The study deals with the paleopathological analysis of human skeletal remains found in 173 Vinařice cultural group graves at Prague-Zlicin from the early stage of the Migration Period (5th century). Because the osteological collection was fragmentary, skeletal remains of only 113 individuals were analysed (28 men, 33 women, 18 children, and 5 adolescents; the sex of 29 adults remained unspecified). Paleopathological diagnoses were grounded in mac…
Tumors in the 18th and 19th centuries at Brno, Czech Republic
Symptoms signs of benign and malignant tumors were observed during paleopathological analysis of skeletal remains from the city of Brno in the Czech Republic. Approximately 1,200 skeletons were examined from two Modern era archaeology sites: the Malá Nová ulice (Little New Street) cemetery and the cemetery of the Nemocnice Milosrdných bratrí (Merciful Brothers' Hospital). Osteomas, usually located on the flat bones of the cranial vault, were the …
Interpretation of Palaeopathological Finds
A summary of all experience in diagnostics of paleopathologic findings and in search for optimum procedures at their interpretation is the main objective of the presented communication. Same procedures like the ones used in the medical practice commonly (1. history, 2. objective examination, 3. working diagnosis, 4. differential diagnosis, 5. final diagnosis) are to be applied to make the paleopathologic diagnosis, but they have to be modified in…
Notes to Palaeopathological Diagnostics of Children’s Diseases
The article addresses the summary of findings in diagnostics up to now and the final interpretation of symptoms of various diseases with respect to specialities of an infantile age. Considerable deformities of children's growing skeletons are caused by metabolic diseases (rickets, scurvy) belonged in the past. As far as traumatic changes are concerned, infractions can be found in the main. Traumas cause a disproportional growth of bones sometimes…
A Case of Osteosarcoma in a Late Medieval–Early Modern Skull from Kyjov (Czech Republic)
After the reconstruction of the original parish church of the Moravian town of Kyjov in the latter part of the seventeenth century, human skeletal remains from the disturbed graves of the surrounding cemetery were gathered in a vault which was partially excavated in 1994. Among disarticulated bones of at least 106 individuals, a fragmented skull of a young male was found, with a massive outgrowth of bone on the right parietal, originally continui…
Two Unusual Benign Tumours in Skulls from the Ossuary at Křtiny (Czech Republic)
Among 554 skulls of adult individuals from the ossuary at Křtiny, Moravia (late thirteenth to the mid-eighteenth centuryAD), three (0.54 per cent) showed evidence of malignant tumours and two others (0.36 per cent) had changes suggestive of unusual benign tumours, which are described in the present article. The calvarium of a 20–25-year-old female has two osteoplastic overgrowths in the region of the left tuber parietale and in the left lateral p…
