  • An Archaeological Study of the Paleo-Environment in Lake Eyasi Basin’s Mumba Rock Shelter in Northern Tanzania

    Pastory M Bushozi•ARTICLE•Utafiti•2025

The connection between prehistoric environmental conditions (the paleo- environment) and archaeological records of Mumba – from the beginning of the Middle Stone Age, Later Stone Age, and the Neolithic, up to the recent historic period – is investigated using a chronological framework. A greater independence than is normally assumed – between innovations in human praxis and substantial climate change – is depicted by the evidence gathered from th…

  • Sharing Features in Archaeological and Crime Scene Investigations

Pastory M Bushozi, Pastory Bushozi et al.•ARTICLE•Tanzania Journal of Sociology•2021

This paper outlays preliminary archaeological investigation on human remains exhumed at Lake Eyasi basin in Mang’ola, Arusha Tanzania. The study intended to underscore the complexities of burial practices in terms of burial styles, chronological sequences of burial cairns, human remains biological profile, pathology and morphological variations. The field excavation of burial graves was carried out at the NguvuKazi, almost three kilometers southe…

  • Investigating the 1930s Kohl-Larsen collection from the Lake Eyasi Basin, Tanzania

Open Access•Gregor D Bader, Gregor Bader et al.•ARTICLE•Mitteilungen der Gesellschaft für…•2021

Since more than 80 years, the University of Tübingen hosts the archaeological collections excavated by Margit and Ludwig Kohl-Larsen between 1934 and 1939 in modern-day Tanzania. Despite the great scientific relevance of these collections, most of them were never published on an international scale and were thus unavailable for the broader Africanist archaeological community. In the light of new excavations around Lake Eyasi, conducted jointly by…

  • Rock art Conservation and Tourism in Iringa Region, Tanzania

Makarius Itambu, Pastory M Bushozi et al.•ARTICLE•Tanzania Journal of Sociology•2021•Referencias: 7

Much of the archaeological research in Tanzania over the last three decades has focused on sites that have yielded early hominin fossils and the resulting data has been analysed and discussed with the goal of generating knowledge about hominins bio-cultural evolution. Previous research focused on monumental, built heritage sites along the coast of the Indian Ocean and the interregional trade networks that existed from 1000 to 1500 A.D located alo…

  • Middle and Later Stone Age Symbolism

    Pastory M Bushozi•ARTICLE•Utafiti•2020•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 18

The archaeological remains found in the Mumba rock-shelter in northern Tanzania – where continuous deposits span from the Middle Stone Age ( MSA ) to the historical period – provide a unique opportunity to study trends in technology and behavioural change of early humans. Developments in symbolic thought may be evident in the production and use of ochre pigments, beads and rock art. At this site, beads and other symbolic artefacts are represented…

  • A German Rifle Casing and Chief Mkwawa of the Wahehe

    Open Access•Pamela R Willoughby, Katie Biittner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 30

During the 2010 excavations of Mlambalasi rockshelter, Iringa Region, Tanzania, a single rifle bullet casing was recovered. Analysis of this casing found that it was manufactured in 1877 at the munitions factory in Danzig for the German infantry’s Mauser 71 rifle. This casing is thus directly linked to the period of German colonization of Tanganyika, during which Iringa was a key centre of anti-colonial resistance. Mlambalasi was the location of …

  • Petrographic Characterization of Raw Material Sources at Oldupai Gorge, Tanzania

Julien Favreau, M Soto et al.•PREPRINT•2019•Citada por: 1

Oldupai Gorge is located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Tanzania along the western margin of the East African Rift System. Oldupai’s sedimentary record exhibits a complex sequence of inter-stratified lithic assemblages associated with the Early, Middle, and Later Stone Age. While diachronic technological change is perceptible, the totality of locally available rocks remained largely unchanged thr…

  • Fingerprinting of Quartzitic Outcrops at Oldupai Gorge, Tanzania

Open Access•María Soto, Julien Favreau et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2019•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 36

The African Early Stone Age record, including that of Oldupai Gorge, reveals widespread evidence for hominin exploitation of quartzose lithic raw materials such as quartzite. However, few studies have sought to characterize these rock types grounded on the assumption that they are not amenable for provenance studies. Through the use of macroscopic, petrographic, and EDXRF analysis, we characterize source material from five quartzitic outcrops bel…

  • Geochronology and technological development

Pastory M Bushozi, Pastory Bushozi et al.•CHAPTER•African Neogene - Climate,…•2017

The material culture of Middle Stone Age (MSA) people is believed to represent a significant step towards the development of modern human behaviour. Among the most important sites, which contain human remains and archaeological records of the MSA in Tanzania, is Mumba rock-shelter. Mumba contains a more or less continuous archaeological record spanning from the MSA to historic period. Therefore, it offers unique opportunities to test hypotheses r…

  • Excavations at Mlambalasi Rockshelter

The Mlambalasi rockshelter in the Iringa Region of southern Tanzania has rich artifactual deposits spanning the Later Stone Age (LSA), Iron Age, and historic periods. Middle Stone Age (MSA) artifacts are also present on the slope in front of the rockshelter. Extensive, systematic excavations in 2006 and 2010 by members of the Iringa Region Archaeological Project (IRAP) illustrate a complex picture of repeated occupations and reuse of the rockshel…

  • The archaeology of the Middle Pleistocene deposits of Lake Eyasi, Tanzania

    Manuel Domínguez-Rodrigo, Fernando Diez-Martín et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2007•Citada por: 7

Ongoing archaeological research at North Lake Eyasi has produced a wealth of information, including a new hominid fossil and several archaeological sites dating to the end of the Middle Pleistocene. One of the sites (WB9) has been excavated and has produced evidence of multiple processes in its formation, including evidence of functional associations of stone tools and faunal remains which are scarce for this time period. The stone tool industry …
