L1-transfer effects and the role of computational complexity in L2 pronoun interpretation
This study investigates pronoun interpretation by second language (L2) learners of English, focusing on whether first language (L1) transfer and/or processing difficulty affect L2 learners’ pronoun resolution. It is hypothesized that L2 learners’ non-target performance in L2-pronoun interpretation is attributable to two sources. The first is the computational complexity required for pronoun resolution, as argued in L1 acquisition by Grodzinsky an…
Experimental evidence supporting the overlapping distribution of core and exempt anaphors
The Korean anaphorcaki-casin, which has been regarded as a local anaphor, has been shown to allow long-distance binding when local binding is not an option (Kim, Ji-Hye & James Yoon. 2009. Long-distance bound local anaphors in Korean: An empirical study of the Korean anaphorcaki-casin.Lingua119. 733-755). In this study, we examined the long-distance binding ofcaki-casinin domains where local binding is possible, and compare it with the long-dista…

A Phenomenological Study of the Lived Experiences of Koreans with Mental Illness
This qualitative phenomenological study explores the meaning of lived experiences for individuals with mental illness in the context of a clubhouse in Korea. In-depth semistructured interviews with 9 clubhouse members were conducted to examine the interactive aspects of clubhouse members and the rehabilitative clubhouse environments. Three major themes from the lived experiences emerged: entering a haven, living in a haven, and having a haven-lik…
Dangerous Women
Dangerous Women addresses the themes of Korean nationalism and gender construction, as well as various issues related to the colonialization and decolonialization of the Korean nation. The contributors explore the troubled category of woman, placing it in the specific context of a marginalized and colonized nation. But Korean women are not merely configured here as metaphors for an emasculated and infantilized homeland; they are also shown to be …
Defining Asian American Realities through Literature
here were some letters in the Dear column recently that reflect a gulf between Asian Americans and the descendants of European immigrants. Two Irish Americans wrote that they could not understand why an American of Oriental descent would complain about being asked what are you within five minutes of being introduced to a Caucasian. One wrote, don't think it's rude... I think it's a positive component of international understanding. Abby says that…
Fresh Talk/Daring Gazes
Fresh Talk/Daring Gazes chronicles the blossoming of Asian American art and anticipates the growing democratization of American art and culture. Pairing work by twenty-four contemporary Asian American visual artists with responses provocatively drawn from cultural critics, other artists, activists, and intellectuals, this book explores themes of geographical movement, the sexuality of Asian bodies, colonization, miscegenation, hybrid forms of imm…

Guest Editor's Introduction
Since its emergence in the late 1960s, Asian American studies has been simultaneously a site for the critique of knowledge formations and a site for the generation of practices aimed at social change. T h e contemporary shift in the demographics of the Asian population within the United States, and the international, political, social, and economic forces of which those demographics are an index, are currently initiating reformulations of the obj…
