  • Sovereign debt and growth in Zambia

    Open Access•Sydney Chikalipah•ARTICLE•Social Sciences & Humanities Open•2021

From the mid-1980s to mid-2000s, Zambia was in egregious debt distress, which resulted in debt relief under the HIPC initiative and MDRI in 2005. Surprisingly, Zambia's debt-to-GDP ratio has increased astronomically from about 22 percent in 2011 to 56 percent in 2018. In view of that, we study the long-run effect of sovereign debt on growth by exploring if, at all, the debt-growth nexus varies with the level of indebtedness. This paper estimates …

  • Does the pursuit of outreach consistently stifle the financial performance of microfinance institutions in sub-Saharan Africa

    Sydney Chikalipah•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2020•Referencias: 32

This article studies the relationship between outreach and the financial performance of 479 microfinance institutions (MFIs) in 37 countries of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), covering the period 1998–2012. Findings indicate a positive and statistically significant relationship between outreach and the financial performance among MFIs in SSA. Providing small microcredits below the US$600 threshold is associated with lower profitability than larger loan…

  • Economic growth and human development

    Open Access•Sydney Chikalipah, Daniel Makina•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2019•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 16

In this paper, we examine the two‐way relationship between economic growth and human development in Zambia over the period 1970 to 2015. By applying the cointegration and vector error correction model techniques, our estimates demonstrate, in the first instance, that economic growth and human development are cointegrated. Second, there is no evidence of two‐way causal effect observable between economic growth and human development in the short ru…

  • Optimal sources of financing for microfinance institutions in sub-Saharan Africa

    Sydney Chikalipah•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2019•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 32

This article studies the relationship between different sources of finance and the financial performance of microfinance institutions in 36 sub-Saharan African countries. The analysis is based on a panel dataset of 471 microfinance institutions over the period 1995 to 2012. By applying the GMM estimator, the results suggest that first, there is a positive and robustly significant relationship between equity and the financial performance of microf…
