  • The Pacific Archaeology Radiocarbon Database

    Open Access•Simon H Bickler, Fiona Petchey et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•2025•Referencias: 65

This paper describes the Pacific Archaeology Radiocarbon Database (PARD), which includes radiocarbon data from archaeological sites excavated in an area commonly described as Near and Remote Oceania. The collated 14C database is available using ArcGIS Online, an online geospatial system with searchable fields and locational navigation. The online PARD currently has over 17,000 radiocarbon measurements from archaeological sites from over 300 islan…

  • The Middle Palaeolithic of the Nejd, Saudi Arabia

    H S Groucutt, Paul S Breeze et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2016•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 22

The Pleistocene archaeological record of the Arabian Peninsula is increasingly recognized as being of great importance for resolving some of the major debates in hominin evolutionary studies. Though there has been an acceleration in the rate of fieldwork and discovery of archaeological sites in recent years, little is known about hominin occupations in the Pleistocene over vast areas of Arabia. Here we report on the identification of five new Mid…

  • Rock art imagery as a proxy for Holocene environmental change

    Open Access•Maria Guagnin, Richard P Jennings et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Citada por: 18•Referencias: 8

The animal species depicted in the rock art of Shuwaymis, Saudi Arabia, provide a record of Holocene climatic changes, as seen by the engravers. Of 1903 animal engravings, 1514 contained sufficient detail to allow identification with confidence. In addition, the stratigraphy of the engravings and the depiction of domesticates provide a broad chronological framework that allows a division into images created during the Holocene humid phase and ani…

  • Rethinking the dispersal of Homo sapiens out of Africa

    Open Access•H S Groucutt, Michael D Petraglia et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2015

Current fossil, genetic, and archeological data indicate that Homo sapiens originated in Africa in the late Middle Pleistocene. By the end of the Late Pleistocene, our species was distributed across every continent except Antarctica, setting the foundations for the subsequent demographic and cultural changes of the Holocene. The intervening processes remain intensely debated and a key theme in hominin evolutionary studies. We review archeological…

    Open Access•Richard P Jennings, Ash Parton et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2014•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 4

Many parts of the Arabian Peninsula contain rock art that has received minimal archaeological attention or has not yet been thoroughly surveyed. In 2001 an extensive rock-art complex called Shuwaymis, Ha'il Province, Saudi Arabia was brought to the attention of the Saudi General Commission for Tourism and Antiquities. This paper sets out the results of the first high-resolution geospatial mapping and recording of rock art at this remote site. The…

    Open Access•Richard P Jennings, Ceri Shipton et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2013•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 15

The authors have undertaken a systematic survey of rock art along the Jubbah palaeolake in northern Saudi Arabia and interpret the results using GIS. They conclude that the overwhelming majority of prehistoric rock art sites overlook contemporary early Holocene palaeolakes, and that the distribution of later Thamudic rock art offers insights into human mobility patterns at Jubbah in the first millennium BC

  • Dryland agricultural expansion and intensification in Kohala, Hawai'i island

    Open Access•T N Ladefoged, Michael W Graves et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1996•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 10

Intensified dryland agriculture was a component of the late prehistoric Hawaiian subsistence base. Which environmental factors permitted, encouraged, restricted, blocked the spreading of intensive agriculture into new areas of fields? A GIS study of the great field system at Kohala on the leeward side of Hawai'i Island explores the controlling variables
