Youth Migration Decisions in Sub-Saharan Africa
This article examines the implications of urban growth on youth migration decisions in Nigeria. We use night light intensity data combined with Living Standards Measurement Study-Integrated Surveys on Agriculture data, as an indicator of urban growth and associated economic opportunities. Employing alternative econometric approaches that exploit the spatial and temporal differences in urban growth as proxied by night light intensity, we find that…
Patterns of labor productivity and income diversification – Empirical evidence from Uganda and Nigeria
Land ownership and technology adoption revisited
The lack of land ownership can discourage agricultural technology adoption, yet there is scarce evidence of the impact of land rental contracts on the adoption of improved crop varieties in developing countries. The current study investigates such impact using a nationally representative survey of Ethiopian maize farmers. In contrast to many previous studies, we show in a simple model that cash-renters are as likely to adopt improved maize variet…
Modeling Preference and Willingness to Pay for Drought Tolerance (DT) in Maize in Rural Zimbabwe
Maize plays a leading role in the food security of millions in southern Africa, yet it is highly vulnerable to the moisture stress brought about by the erratic rainfall patterns that characterize weather systems in the area. Developing and making drought-tolerant maize varieties available to farmers in the region has thus long been a key goal on the regional development agenda. Farm-level adoption of these varieties, however, depends on local per…
A bio-economic analysis of the benefits of conservation agriculture
Managing vulnerability to drought and enhancing livelihood resilience in sub-Saharan Africa
Agriculture and the economies of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are highly sensitive to climatic variability. Drought, in particular, represents one of the most important natural factors contributing to malnutrition and famine in many parts of the region. The overall impact of drought on a given country/region and its ability to recover from the resulting social, economic and environmental impacts depends on several factors. The economic, social and en…
Are there systematic gender differences in the adoption of sustainable agricultural intensification practices? Evidence from Kenya
Impact of Improved Maize Adoption on Welfare of Farm Households in Malawi
Adoption of interrelated sustainable agricultural practices in smallholder systems
Adoption of Multiple Sustainable Agricultural Practices in Rural Ethiopia
The adoption and diffusion of sustainable agricultural practices (SAPs) has become an important issue in the development‐policy agenda for sub‐Saharan Africa, especially as a way to tackle land degradation, low agricultural productivity and poverty. However, the adoption rates of SAPs remain below expected levels. This study analyses the factors that facilitate or impede the probability and level of adoption of interrelated SAPs, using recent dat…
Cropping system diversification, conservation tillage and modern seed adoption in Ethiopia
Adoption of improved wheat varieties and impacts on household food security in Ethiopia
Impact of modern agricultural technologies on smallholder welfare
Agricultural Technology, Crop Income, and Poverty Alleviation in Uganda
Adoption and adaptation of natural resource management innovations in smallholder agriculture
Coping better with current climatic variability in the rain-fed farming systems of sub-Saharan Africa
Watershed externalities, shifting cropping patterns and groundwater depletion in Indian semi-arid villages
Frequent droughts and groundwater depletion are critical constraints to improving agricultural productivity in the semi-arid tropics. India has been promoting integrated watershed management in drought-prone areas to address these constraints. Watershed communities are being assisted to invest in groundwater re-charging facilities. While communities and the public bear such costs, individual farmers capture irrigation benefits. Groundwater is a f…
