Willingness to pay more taxes to improve public healthcare in the Covid-19 era
The objective of this study is to examine the factors that influence willingness to pay more taxes to improve public healthcare (WTP) during the COVID-19 era. The multilevel regression model is employed in an international survey conducted across 19 countries to test several hypotheses about the factors predicting WTP. An increase in COVID-19 mortality reduces WTP. Our findings suggest, therefore, that the citizenry views the increase in COVID-19…
Not all informal payments are bad
In this study, we investigate the effect of making different types of informal payments in public services on life satisfaction. We theorize that the effect of different informal payments on life satisfaction is not universally negative. Specifically, we hypothesize that the direction of the effect depends on the specific type of motivation for making such payments. As such, we articulate three hypotheses on the effect of specific motivations for…

Effect of the contextual (community) level social trust on women’s empowerment
The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of contextual (community) level social trust on women’s empowerment. The specific knowledge gap explored in this study is that the previous studies theorized that community trust has a positive impact on women’s empowerment. Thus, an increase in trust in the community will empower women. However, such an assumption has been never empirically tested and confirmed. Against this backdrop, the presen…
Quantifying the influence of informal payments on self-rated health
In contrast to previous studies that have focused on proximal outcomes such as access to and the utilization of healthcare, this study establishes and quantifies the influence of informal payments (IP) directly on population self-rated health, which can be considered the ultimate outcome. More specifically, we examine how making informal payments influences self-rated health by testing several theoretically grounded explanations of the influence …
Height and life‐satisfaction nexus
Height and life satisfaction
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of height on life satisfaction. METHODS: We use data from a recent multi-country survey that was conducted in 27 nations. RESULTS: Our main finding is that height does have a strong positive effect on life satisfaction. These findings remain positive and significant when we use a comprehensive set of well-known covariates of life-satisfaction at both the individual and country levels. These findings also remain …
Influence of height on likelihood of employment, occupational sorting, and earnings in 27 post‐communist countries
OBJECTIVES: We study the influence of height on labour market outcomes using micro-data from a recent survey that cover 27 post-communist countries. Specifically, we focus on the influence of height on three dimensions of labour market outcome: (1) likelihood of employment, (2) occupational sorting, and (3) earnings. METHODS: We use micro-data from 2016 Life-In-Transition survey (LITS) which was jointly conducted by the European Bank for Reconstr…

The Effects of Corruption on Satisfaction with Local and National Governments. Does Corruption ‘Grease the Wheels’
A causal association was found between higher levels of corruption and lower levels of satisfaction with local and national governments. However, interaction term analysis provides suggestive evidence that: first, as public service satisfaction increases, the effects of corruption change from negative values to positive values for both local and national governments; second, as political situations improve, the negative effects of corruption dimi…
Influence of interpersonal and institutional trusts on welfare state support revisited
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to focus on the effects of interpersonal and institutional trust on welfare state support in the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union (FSU). Design/methodology/approach The authors use micro-data from two rounds of a multinational survey conducted in these countries in 2010 and 2016. The outcome variable of interest is the willingness to pay more taxes to support the welfare state. The autho…

Does Institutional Trust Increase Willingness to Pay More Taxes to Support the Welfare State
We evaluate the effect of institutional trust on the willingness to pay more taxes to support the welfare state. We found a positive effect of institutional trust on the willingness to pay more taxes to support the welfare state irrespective of the empirical approach used. Our instrumental variable analysis shows that causality run from institutional trust to welfare state support. A one-unit increase in institutional trust leads to a 15 percenta…
Explaining Support for Structural Attribution of Poverty in Post-Communist Countries
We examine support for the structural attribution of poverty in 24 post-communist countries (N = 37,307) for the period from 2006 to 2010 by considering: (1) individual-level characteristics, (2) country- level characteristics, and (3) interactions between individual- and country-level characteristics. At the individual-level, adherence to the norms of equity, the market economy, and work ethics all significantly weaken structural attribution of …
Does trust increase willingness to pay higher taxes to help the needy
The article studies the causal effect of trust on the willingness to pay higher taxes to help the needy in a sample of 29 countries of Eastern and Southern Europe, and the former Soviet Union and Mongolia. It is hypothesized that interpersonal trust leads to a greater willingness to pay taxes to help the needy since (i) trust increases the likelihood of helping strangers; (ii) trust fosters solidarity and cooperation when working to solve common …
