  • When Hell is Other People. Interiority and Skepticism in António Lopes da Veiga

    Open Access•Fernando Rodríguez Mediano, Carlos Cañete•ARTICLE•Culture & History Digital Journal•2017•Referencias: 5

The study of the process of construction of modern subjectivity offers an image of constant tensions between universality and particularity, which could be considered a manifestation of the conflictual nature of Modernity itself. As a way to solve the problems derived of the separation between universal and particular dimensions of this process -that has resulted in opposing interpretations regarding its confesional nature- a close study of the p…

  • Judith and the Dragon

Open Access•Vı́ctor M Fernández, Jorge De Torres Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Aethiopica•2016

In the 2014 excavations at the Jesuit church of Gorgora Iyäsus on the northern shore of Lake Ṭana a remarkable relief in stone was unearthed. The relief was originally part of the church’s façade. It represents the biblical heroine Judith over a dragon and it contains two inscriptions in Gǝʿǝz from the Book of Judith and Genesis. This piece represents one of the few recorded inscriptions on stone from the end of the Aksumite period to the present…

  • The Difficult Unity of the Mediterranean in the Works and Expeditions of Bory de Saint-Vincent (1778-1846)

    Open Access•Carlos Cañete•ARTICLE•Culture & History Digital Journal•2012•Referencias: 10

For a long time consigned to oblivion, the figure of the soldier and naturalist Bory de Saint-Vincent has been during recent years the subject of a renewed but timid interest. This recovery is justified especially for his role as leader of the French missions in the Morea and Algeria, which replicated the military-scientific model that started in Egypt. Indeed, this leadership and the works of anthropology or botany that he produced as a result a…

  • The Azazo Project

Jaime Almansa, Gashaw Belay et al.•ARTICLE•Public Archaeology•2011•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 11

In this article we discuss the motivations, aims, and preliminary results of working with a local community in Ethiopia. Trying to escape from the (neo)colonial archaeology that is still practised in Africa, this project aims to achieve a cooperative and participative archaeology. This work with the community has been one of our main priorities in our last seasons, and although we have focused on elementary school and university students, we have…

  • Almost the same

    Carlos Cañete, Jaime Vives-Ferrándiz et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•2011•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 17

In recent years, in the wake of postcolonial studies, archaeologists have gradually begun to stress the concepts of coexistence and hybridization in their attempts to understand situations of culture contact. Domination and hegemony have also begun to lose ground in narratives of the past, as if these two sets of tenets were contradictory. We argue that there is room for a reassessment of this dichotomy. In this paper we address the problem throu…
