Thermal Alterations of Knapped Stone Tools on a Micro-scale
A forest-steppe landscape and the settlement Ksizovo-1 in the Don region during the Middle Bronze Age
Systematic investigations of Bronze Age settlements in different regions of western Eurasia have provided new insights into settlement structures, land use, and past mobile lifestyles. In this paper, we examine the single-layered site of Ksizovo-1 in the Upper Don basin, located in a microregion of the Eastern European forest-steppe. We integrate archaeological, bioarchaeological, and molecular investigations to evaluate if the Middle Bronze Age …
Socio‐Cultural Connectivity Along the Zagros Mountains
Recent archaeological investigations in the Kohgiluyeh region of southwestern Iran revealed numerous Neolithic sites along with diverse settlement strategies adapted to the local resources and environmental conditions of this high mountainous stretch of the Zagros Mountains. The regional Neolithic chipped stone collections mainly indicate the acquisition and use of local mineral resources, with obsidian being uncommon. Its occurrence suggests the…
Gird-I Begum – Report on the 2022 Excavations
In the summer of 2022, renewed excavations were conducted at the site of Gird-i Begum in the Shahrizor Plain, Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The project aims to examine patterns of mobility, exchange, and resource acquisition practiced by the inhabitants of Gird-i Begum over time. To do so we re-examine the stratigraphic sequence, with a focus on continuities and breaks in site occupation. While the earliest occupation of the site dates to the Halaf p…
At the onset of settled pastoralism – Implications of archaeozoological and isotope analyses from Bronze age sites in the North Caucasus
Bioarchaeological studies provide a valuable contribution to the understanding of the economy and activities of prehistoric populations in mountain regions. The Late Bronze Age in the Caucasus is an epoch of fundamental transformations that is accompanied by the development of a semi-stationary pastoral economy and ultimately by the emergence of combined mountain agriculture. So far, only a few archaeozoological assemblages from this period have …
The first occupation of the mountains
Isotopic perspectives on pastoral practices in the Eastern European forest-steppe during the Middle Bronze Age
This study investigates the modes of subsistence practices of a Middle Don Catacomb Culture community for which archaeological evidence suggests a reliance on seasonal mobility of humans and their herds. A sequential multi-isotope approach [stable carbon (δ13C), stable oxygen (δ18O), and strontium (87Sr/86Sr)] on tooth enamel of mainly domestic animals (cattle and sheep/goat) from the Middle Bronze Age settlement Ksizovo-1 provides new and import…
Arslantepe in the foreground
This paper focuses on the study of large blade assemblages made from chert raw materials at the site of Arslantepe VI-A period (3500–3200 BCE). By applying an analytical approach combining raw material characterization (NM-PCI protocol), technological and use-wear analyses, and experimental archaeology, we discuss our results from a double perspective. At first glance, we demonstrate the great potential that this proxy offers for the reconstructi…
Climate change and the taphonomic signature of Neolithic mounds
This paper discusses the impact of modern land use and climate change on mounded prehistoric sites, considering the evidence from Kur River Basin (southwestern Iran). By applying remote sensing and GIS techniques to historical and recent satellite imagery, we monitored an assemblage of 45 Neolithic mounds in order to map and quantify their taphonomic signatures over the last 53 years. Our results highlight that the deterioration of sites occurred…
Settlement Complex of the Andronovo (Fedorovo) Culture in the Tai Locality in Baraba Forest-Steppe
This article describes first results of studies at the Tartas-5 settlement (Vengerovsky District, Novosibirsk Region), located on the collapsing part of the floodplain terrace of the left bank of the Tartas River, in the Tai locality, which, both in ancient times and nowadays, is completely flooded. This circumstance makes it extremely difficult to identify cultural layers. The upper out of two cultural layers at the site contained the finds tent…
Compositional features of cherts from the Jebel Zawa mines (Dohuk, Kurdistan Region of Iraq) and implications for exploitation strategies during the Late Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age
The Prehistory and Protohistory of the northwestern region of Iraqi Kurdistan
This paper presents a preliminary assessment of the prehistoric and protohistoric periods investigated by the Udine University in collaboration with the Sapienza University of Rome and the Duhok Directorate of Antiquities in the region of Northern Kurdistan (Iraq). The investigated area features different geographical units, such as mountains, piedmont areas, intermontane basins and valleys, and the alluvial plains of the Tigris River and its tri…
Medieval Presence at the Periphery of the Nubian State of Makuria
This paper presents some medieval material from remote areas within the Bayuda and the Western Deserts in Sudan, and draws several conclusions about the presence of Christianity and the Makurian administration within them. First, the general topographical setting of the different areas are described in order to define the geographical frame of the paper. The Wadi Abu Dom is an ephemeral fluviatile valley situated within the central and western Ba…
